The animated film leaned a bit more into the comedy while this one was a bit more serious. But I felt like they captured the spirit of the story really well.

The animation on the dragons was incredible. They just looked spectacular. The lighting done on Toothless especially was fantastic. Mason Thames is one of my favorite young actors going right now and I've thought he's been great in the Black Phone movies and I thought he was awesome in this. I don't want to harp on them too much, but I think something a lot of the live action Disney movies miss the mark on is keeping the world feeling magical. Like with Beauty & the Beast or Lion King or Little Mermaid, I think they try and show off how "real" they can make everything look, but that can negate the whimsy. Here, the whimsy and more fantastical look of things is intact and that helps so much. The dragons look like they did in the animated movie. Even the people look a little more exaggerated and that pulls us into the world a lot more.
