The We We Are

The way this episode ended was cruel! This was so anxiety inducing. I am so thankful I can just go right into S2!!! The last line of dialogue was everything.

Watched on: Apple / Runtime: 43:36

Hope you enjoy!

Okay Jax (and fellow watchers), I have gifts for you upon the finish of season 1. These are all, as of now, spoiler free. They were released between Season 1 and the start of Season 2. First…Apple released “The Lexington Letter”…where another Lumon employee contacted the press trying to leak about life on the Severed floor. You’ll get to see the emails from the reporter and their editors, and also…THE LEAKED MACRODATA REFINER’S ORIENTATION BOOKLET! https://books.apple.com/us/book/severance/id1613220757 Again, this is spoiler free, but it is a great backstory on some of the Lumon lore. While you don’t need to read it to enjoy the show…it does help reinforce a few things that will make Season 2 easier to understand. Second…just in case you need to be reminded that who owns the clock doesn’t mean they own the hour, Apple Books released a free excerpt of “The You You Are” by Dr. Ricken Lazlo Hale, PhD. https://books.apple.com/us/book/the-you-you-are/id6738364141 And if reading self-help books, even excerpts, isn’t your thing…don’t worry, can listen to it, as read by the author himself! https://books.apple.com/us/audiobook/the-you-you-are/id1780413757 Seriously, though, Micheal Chernus does a great job with the character, and it was great of him to do this audiobook. All these are free and just excellent companions to the show. I hope people enjoy them!

When TV Guide named this episode the best episode of all television of 2022, they said “A 40-minute seizure. A heart attack for two-thirds of an hour. The closest you will get to experiencing G-forces on your couch.” And they might have undersold it. Just perfect pacing, perfect writing, perfect balance, every single second designed to give you anxiety, goosebumps, and everything. Just…*chef’s kiss*. Even Dylan’s glasses almost falling off just adds to the anxiety and tension! I’m sure someone else has said it, but just like Irving…I’m sure I would love the sound of Radar as well, if Radar was my dog! Irving definitely has the slowest burn story of the three outties we saw today….but just you wait. Oh my…. Helena…in a show of complicated characters, she may be the most complicated. At the very least, she will be up there with ******** (name redacted) as you get into Season 2. Her motivations….what are her motivations even…she is so divisive. But god damned, Britt Lower does not get enough credit for how she has played Hely. This episode truly belongs to her, seeing her deal with everything she learns, moment by moment. Also, Devon is a straight up G. There is no one I’d want to have my back more in this show than Devon.

Rickon! Getting to see his anxiety, his self-doubt, his self-hatred….he’s a complicated character who isn’t getting his due but I think deserves more as the season goes on. That shot where we get the Helena Eagen reveal…everyone is so blown away by the reveal that they miss that she’s on an elevator, going down (to the banquet) with a shot that is so close to the Severed elevator…except we see her slowly descending to her new floor where she needs to do her job. *chef’s kiss* Not to mention Hely walking through the parting photo of Helena’s face…her innie voice, coming out. *chef’s kiss* The sound editing of this is also just so underrated! Using that static-y sound for the changes like is in the title, using the *ding* of the elevator to end the episode…I don’t think there’s ever been a show where even the sound editing gets me passionate. But such a *chef’s kiss* Just imagine…three years we had who watched it when it was released, convincing ourselves that they would ignore what Mark said would get ignored, that people would think that it’s about the baby being alive, that Hely would be ignored……you are luckier than you can imagine. But that finishing line…”She’s Alive”…as TV Guide said, the best final line of dialogue since that episode of Lost where Jack says “We have to go back!”

*chef’s kiss*
