📹🌰BEHIND THE SCENES: ACORN WEEVIL ANIMATION📹🌰

Deep Look has had another unbeweevible year with over 56 million views on YouTube in 2024. One of our most popular episodes of 2024 is our acorn weevil video. Our designer Teodros Hailye, pictured above, talks about how he animated an acorn weevil drilling into an acorn in this short video and special Patreon-only Q&A below.

What is your process before you begin to animate?

I do extensive visual research of the creature and study photos, videos and research papers.

How detailed are your discussions with the producer before you start working on an animation?

I have very detailed talks with the producer. We discuss the what, why, and how from multiple angles and try to determine what would best serve the story.

What are all the programs you use for your animations?

I use Pixologic Zbrush, Maxon Cinema 4d, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe After Effects.

What was most challenging about animating the acorn weevil?

Rigging the weevil 3D model so that it could bore a straight hole while its body leaned forward as its head swiveled from side to side.

Below are images of various stages of Teodros’ acorn weevil animation.

You can watch Teodros' final version of his acorn weevil animation in our video here

What has been the most challenging Deep Look critter to animate?

Honestly, a snowflake formation! If you haven’t seen the video you can watch it here.

What is your favorite Deep Look critter so far?

Tick! Here’s the link to Deep Look’s tick video with Teodros’ animation of how a tick digs into us with two hooks. (His animation starts at 2 minutes and 11 seconds into the video.)

What advice would you give someone interested in becoming an animator?

Study, Work, Repeat! 🙂
