My favorite lesser known fact is that Aedes aegypti are often out-competed by their niche sharing cousins Aedes albopictus. Something interesting happens when these two species accidentally mate. Since aegypti females only mate once, mating with a male albopictus wastes their resources by resulting in a "sterile" mosquito. It's not all good news, as albopictus is also highly anthropophilic and feed on people regularly.
