Got Questions About the Coronavirus?

Hey Deep Peeps!

We’ve heard from many of you that you want a Deep Look video on the coronavirus and COVID-19. Well, good news - we're in the process of researching a special episode on this very topic.

But first we want to know: What’s been missing from the current media coverage? What would you like to know more about? What COVID-19-related science, health and nature topics could we take a closer look at  – really, really closely – for you?

Please share your coronavirus and COVID-19 questions and episode ideas below. We will do our best to answer some of these questions in the upcoming episode.

Thanks –– and stay safe! ❤️

Got Questions About the Coronavirus?

Comments

As if to answer one of my own questions, check out DOI: 10.1128/CMR.00023-07 Quoting: The presence of a large reservoir of SARS-CoV-like viruses in horseshoe bats, together with the culture of eating exotic mammals in southern China, is a time bomb. The possibility of the reemergence of SARS and other novel viruses from animals or laboratories and therefore the need for preparedness should not be ignored.

Another topic I thought of is perhaps a meditation on the source of emerging infections in general. There's the notion of zoonoses in general being a threat to humans since we haven't had a chance to coevolve with bugs that are new to our species. But humans suffer from Coronaviruses already and we've engaged with bats, currently thought to be the source of COVID19. Why do these new infections just explode seemingly out of nowhere? Where are the reservoirs and why aren't we already aware of them? Why did this catch us by surprise? [Tangentially related: have you seen the risks of the permafrost defrosting? http://www.bbc.com/earth/story/20170504-there-are-diseases-hidden-in-ice-and-they-are-waking-up ] Ultimately, how do we keep this from happening again?
