Field Notes: Giant Malaysian Leaf Insects
Added 2019-10-01 17:35:55 +0000 UTCWhile we weren't able to fly to Malaysia to film these fascinating insects, we're fortunate that there's an incredible science museum located in the heart of San Francisco–the California Academy of Sciences–with an extraordinary collection of wildlife. These masters of camouflage are featured in a new exhibit, "Color of Life", that explores the important role of color in the natural world.
Patrick Lee, an Animal Care Manager at the museum, was kind enough to grant producers Jenny Oh and Josh Cassidy (who also serves as our cinematographer) permission to film the eggs, nymphs and adults that reside in their USDA containment room. (This temperature-controlled space keeps the insects healthy, as well as prevents them from escaping and contaminating themselves or us.)
