Hi John, I didn't know either but found the reason why you eat unagi on the 18th day before the Lixia (็ซๅคใใใฃใใ) which is known as ๅ็จใฎไธใฎๆฅใใฉใใใฎใใใฎใฒใ. Basically it's the changing of the season and to keep your stamina and health up, you eat unagi (based on a poem in the Man'yลshลซ (ไธ่้ใใพใใใใใ ใใ).
