since making the video i figured out a way to stop the animations lagging (it still happens but i load them into memory off screen at the start of the game.
i also had an attempt at adding the grapples to my battle system in the game maker prototype but didn't get far before getting a serious headache, as expected...
it would probably be easier to make the battle system in that from scratch.
