New Music – A Conversation with Time

Another reactive piano! This one is much more complex than the previous composition.

This came about by imagining what it would be like yelling in a large space, like a cathedral, but instead of hearing back a predictable echo, you hear back something COMPLETELY different.  In this case, it sounds like the piano is conversing with multiple whales.

Musically speaking, I realized after the fact how closely the song resembles Kirk MacDonald’s Calendula, but, like it’s evil brother.  I’ve been playing Calendula a lot at the piano lately, so it figures some of its phrasing and melodic contour would rub off on me when improvising.

Describing how all the instruments, audio routing, and effect chains are creating these interactions is way too cumbersome to write (and read!).  But the main components are long reverbs (7 secs), delay (1 secs), and sound design (pitch shifting, distortion, etc), and randomness (LFOs).  In some cases, these sounds are routed BACK into the interactive effects chain to create more weird sounds.

Thanks for listening!
