First appearance of a mandrill in a beetle comic if I’m not mistaken. Also, something technique related which I haven’t mentioned before: when I’m shading the objects or people in my drawings, Ive started using the color wheel in a method I’ve picked up in the last year. Basically, instead of just darkening the base color (adding black) I actually mix it with kind of dark indigo (purple/navy). So rather than bringing the color down a notch on the greyscale, I’m adding a complementary or secondary value to the color. Kind of difficult to explain but easy to demonstrate so I’ll include that in a future video discussing my process. I think that simple trick adds a lot of dimension to the shapes and also makes the colors pop, which I think is on display in this comic.
