How I Learn + Back To The Future + heads up

πŸ•‘2 min read

Hi all!  I'm still on hiatus, so you weren't charged last month, and won't be charged until further notice.

Since I'm bad at emails, I finally wrote a Frequently Asked Questions page! As part of it, I wrote 1700+ words on tips for learning math, writing fiction & non-fiction, coding, game design, going indie, and mental health. I hope it's useful for some of y'all!

πŸ€”β€œHow Do I Learn X?” (1 min read per section, 9 min total) πŸ€”
(originally a part of the full FAQ)

. . .

You may have noticed I've revamped my website & blog!

I wanna go back to basics, my online presence just being "site + blog" – y'know, Web 1.0! Most of us are now too aware of the costs of Web 2.0: the way it grinds down your attention, kills empathy and critical thought, is now a 24/7 psy-ops battleground, etc.

You may have noticed I rarely use Twitter anymore. My new site doesn't even link to my Twitter – only to my newsletter (so there's no algorithm between me & you) and my RSS feed.

What's RSS? I'm glad you asked! Imagine the News Feed but open-source, decentralized, and not manipulated by an algorithm. Now imagine we had this 20 years ago then abandoned it like fools.

Well, it's time to go back to the future! If you want to return to RSS, or want to convince a friend to, I've got a new blog post explaining the why & how of RSS:

. . .

Finally, speaking of leaving Web 2.0, a heads up: next week, I'm purging 99.1% of my old tweets. If we've interacted on Twitter before (search @ncasenmare + your @username) and you want to save those tweets, you'd best take a screenshot now.

I made a small tool with the Twitter API that lets you purge all your old tweets, unless it passes a filter like ">100 retweets" or "posted in this date range". I'll make it open-source, with a tutorial on my blog! Let me know if you, too, wanna PURGE THE TWEETS

πŸ‘―,

P.S: Are any of you 1) in the homeschooling/unschooling movement, or 2) in the healthspan-extension/longevity biz?  Email or Patreon-message me!  I've been very curious recently about how I can contribute to those.

Good luck untangling yourself from the Web 2.0, it sounds like a really healthy thing! I never was into RSS although I've seen it around, but thanks for the tutorial! That being said, I've not been into news feed a lot as a whole, as it overwhelms me whatever the format, so...

I'm an old-school RSS fan. Apparently Patreon actually has an RSS feed feature... though it may be audio only. I've seen it on some of the things I support.

I'm glad to read this because I didn't realize you had an RSS feed! You might be amused to hear that I saw this post in my RSS reader using an email-to-RSS system I hacked up for Patreon messages and related mailing lists.

My household has two generations of unschoolers! I've sent you an email :-)

I'm *incredibly* into longevity and extending lifespan/healthspan (I'm a major donor to SENS, an investor in the Methuselah Fund, and I've coordinated donation matching campaigns). I'd be thrilled to talk to you. The single biggest thing those movements need is more understanding and publicity, and the second biggest thing is more people actively working on them (not just raising money). I sent you an email.

Very very interested in the tweet deleter! Also, I never stopped using RSS lol

Rev Storm

Very interested in the open-source Tweet Deleter!
