Patreon Paused + Sabbatical Starts!

(2 minute read)

For the $2+ and $5+ backers, here's this month's Wall of Thanks and Polygon avatars! Also sent some of you a drawing of a duck, entitled, "Quack to School"

---------

Hi all!

On second thought, I'm starting my 6-month sabbatical now. Trying to finish my next project while moving to a new city during a pandemic would be... non-ideal.

Besides, you may have noticed from my last few posts that Nicky Mental Health levels are dipping pretty low. Not at the "being awake sickens me" threshold yet, thankfully, but I've learnt my lesson from last time – take the break before I break.

So: I'm on sabbatical! I paused the Patreon yesterday. You won't be charged for September, nor until March 1st, 2021.

This is the first time I've ever paused this Patreon since it launched six years ago. Don't worry, I'll still tell you what I'm up to once-a-month-ish! (With reminders that the Patreon's still paused)

I'll spend these months:

1) Being with people I care about.

Virtually, or masked+distanced+outdoors in-person. (I'm in a country that's relatively safe now.) My relationships have been taking the backseat – no, trunk seat – for way too long.

I've been thinking... Löttery players are fooled, 'coz only löttery winners make the news, not löttery losers. "Availability bias" screws up what you think is valuable. I think the same's happened to the rest of us, re: "work-life" values. People make the news for being great artists, athletes, scientists. People don't make the news for being great partners, parents, friends. (People do, however, make the news for being a great artist who turns out to be a horrific abuser.)

"Availability bias" screws up what you think is valuable.

2) Exploring stuff I've put off for years to focus on "work".

Such as: feminizing my voice, improving my drawing skills, designing plushies & costumes, studying Bayesian/causal statistics & AI, learning music composition, trying video production.

Some of these are to expand my creator capabilities! Some are just personally meaningful to me, or people I love.

3) Moving cities.

Yeah this'll suck.

. . .

Anyway, I say it again & again but I still mean it every time: thank you for taking a chance on me & supporting me. <3 You gift me financial independence, which means not only creative independence, but also means I can be flexible enough to take long-ass breaks when my psychological health is at risk. Which, at present, it is.

So: Patreon's paused from this month to March 1st, and I'll still update once-a-month-ish, whilst refilling my tanks! As for you: please take care of you, too. This year's been a hamfisted moral in how fragile life is, so make an exact list of who and what is important to you, and make no compromises about them.

Stay golden, y'all. See you for an non-pledge-charged post next month!

Sending you hugs and wishing you an excellent sabbatical <3

💕💜💙❤️💛❣ So glad you're doing this for yourself. Take good care and enjoy your rest and your people!

The end of your sabbatical is closer than you think. already now. but I dont think that this should put you under pressure. I do whatever i want and when i look back at the end there might be a small feeling of wasted time. but then i remember, that i did what i wanted to do at that time and i feel happy.

Yes! Give yourself the space you need. So glad to hear this, as your work is ever inspirational, and inspiration needs it space. Hope it is restful and nourishing!

@AP That course doesn't cover Bayesian for as far as I know, but I didn't go through all chapters yet. 3Blue1Brown YT channel has a nice video about Bayes theorem: https://youtu.be/HZGCoVF3YvM . Unfortunately I don't know of any other good Bayesian resources.

Stef van der Struijk

Same here. What you will do in the next six month is part of what I am comfortable supporting. But I also understand it might put an unwanted pressure. Have a lovely time off anyhow :)

Michael Freudenthal

Bravo to you for seeing this in yourself, and pushing through to it, and for sharing it. It has been hard for me, recently, to listen to myself long enough to hear similar things that my body and mind are trying to tell me.

Scott Price

Stay safe and healthy Nicky. Good luck wit the move!

Jared Cosulich

Do they do the Bayesian stuff @Stef? I friend said when they learnt that it changed their view of the world and (for them) cured them of their depression after multiple doctors and psychologists could not help them... pretty cool.

AP

I support whatever decision you've made Nicky but I'd second Dave's comment: this is not transactional for me either. And I'd be open to continuing the monthly support. Perhaps you can set up a mini side Patreon for those who want to pledge there.

AP

Enjoy your break!

Itajn

Thanks for setting a good example, taking a break when you need. 🤗

Good luck with the move!!

Have fun! 👋👋👋

Best wishes on your adventures!

Enjoy your sabbatical! For learning about AI, I would recommend the FastAI (2) course. They have a free book ("fastbook" - in Jupyter Notebook format on GitHub) and YT lectures. Unlike many other Deep Learning courses, you start hands-on and then go deeper into the how and why. So even if you only go a few lessons deep, you've learned a lot.

Stef van der Struijk

Recharge yourself ! Wish you the best.

Victor Lopez

Sending love and support! Take all the time you need! I too am taking a sabbatical starting today coincidentally. I resigned 3 months and today was the last day!

We'll all be here when you're ready to come back :) Looking forward to your updates in the mean time. p.s. have you started watching Lovecraft Country?

Michael Huff

I think you should let people opt out of the Patreon if you want, but I get it. You are erring on the side of being conscientious. But if it's possible, please opt me into continuing my monthly support while you are on sabbatical. I don't consider this a transactional relationship. I consider it an investment in you as a person. And you as a person needs a break. No different than an employee taking time off for a (paid) vacation or sabbatical.

Thank you! ^_^
