Last month, I made a game to reflect on what's going on. Now, post-election, I reflect on that reflection.
We Become What We Behold, a Post-Mortem
Half of this blog post is behind-the-scenes stuff on WBWWB, and lessons I learnt about game design & storytelling. But the other half is me trying to answer... what now?
Whoever's side you were on, it's probably not the best feeling in the world to wake up and learn that sixty million – that's six with seven zeroes – of your fellow citizens hate your guts. But after a couple days of dealing with my shock, I found myself... humbled. And determined. After faffing about for a year, I suddenly realize what my true calling is.
Everyone on all sides is wondering how our society got so divided. Well guess what, I've made games & sims to explain how societies get divided! Which – reminder – I could only do because of all of your wonderful, generous support! So, dear supporters, here's what's next:
I want to help people. I want to understand people. And now, I must help people understand people.
Short-term, that means more stuff like Parable of the Polygons. Long-term, that means 1) finding common goals to unite our divided world, 2) making tools for thinking about social complexity, and 3) helping instill virtues of wisdom, curiosity, and seeking understanding with one another. Gosh I probably sound like some kind of snakehandling preacher, but it feels so good to – after 48 hours of freaking out over what seemed like an apocalyptic threat – to finally realize it's really an opportunity. It's a challenge we can tackle. It's a challenge we must tackle.
And I couldn't ask for a better community of supporters, fans, and friends to do this with.
Thank you. <3
