I ran a D&D game for ONE player

The first video of 2024! This one was a lot of fun to make, even though there were some parts of one-on-one D&D that were very challenging.

Have any of you played duet D&D? What did you think?

Much of my very early intro to D&D (as a tween/teen) was just two of us and both rules- and rolls-light. My friend's dad had played and he'd read the few books his dad had, so he DMed and I was a player. Had a great time!

That's awesome! I could see running a whole party (especially if the player managed some or all of 'em in combat!) for a long-running duet campaign.

I've been running a one-on-one D&D campaign for my wife for the past couple of years. We moved at the beginning of lockdown, missed playing D&D, and weren't super enthusiastic about moving to online play, so it was a "let's make the best of it" situation. It's been a blast! It's given me license to run with story concepts that I know she'll be into that other players might not be, and try some things out where I know she'll be willing to give me feedback. Rather than the sidekick method, I've given her a full party to work with. She's a sorcerer, running with a cleric, fighter, and rogue. That absolutely gets crazy complex at times, but I've gone with builds for the NPC party members that emphasize passive abilities and stat boosts over anything that would result in very complicated turns, so combat moves pretty quickly, and it puts the emphasis on what my wife decides to do with her character. I've also emphasized combats with bigger legendary monsters to reduce the clutter on the battlefield, and while those are often pretty challenging to plan out, that's been pretty fun as well! And in general, it's been a more heavily roleplay oriented campaign, rather than combat heavy. Overall, it's one of my favorite ever campaigns, and my wife has latched onto her character in a deeper way than I've ever seen from her before.

The first RPG that I ever played was a one-on-one home-brew, rule-less game! Thank you for reminding me of it, Ginny! πŸ˜„
