Chroniques de l'eau salée- making of 01

I wanted to show some behind the scenes of our graduation film "Tales of salted water" a short film codirected with the amazing:

Tamerlan Bekmurzayev https://www.instagram.com/tamerlanbekmurzayev/

Antoine Carré: https://www.instagram.com/antcarre/

Alex Petit https://www.instagram.com/alexpetit_/

Martin Robic https://www.instagram.com/robic.martin/

Go check out their work!

Here I will show you How I did this shot. It was the longest and more difficult I had to do in this film.

To do the shots you need layouts to know how the characters are placed and move.

Here are two layouts made by the amazing Alex Petit.

And here some more by Antoine Carré! Antoine and Alex where in charge of character design and character layout.

Here was the shot as seen in our animatic. Also made by Antoine. Once you have the layouts and animatic you can start animating a shot (I also had the model sheet and knew what's happening in the story, it's the last farewell before the kid in the boat leaves)

Here is my final rough, it's composed of multiple different elelments as you can see. There is a boat cycle, then the cycle ends and the boat is pushed out of the frame by the wave. Then there is the wave of water created by the surface tension of the giant dog breaking threw the surface of the water ( water fx), and then a quadruped run of the dog and then the animations of the grandfather, father, little sister and mom on the back of the dog.

During this film I would clean directly on a pretty rough animation, and would only tiedown the parts I would stuggle more to keep on model. Most of my shots were animated in straight ahead, each element at a time.

As for coloring, I was in charge of the colorscript of the film. This shot is part of the sequence corresponding to the 6th line of the colorscript.

Here is an exemple of another shot of this sequence, the colors had to match this palette.

Here is the shot once colored in tvpain. This is the shot I had on tvpaint before compositing.

Our art direction didn't had much compositing. in the shot below the main differences are the background movement and some tweeks in the colour of the water.

Hope you liked this behind the scenes of our graduation film. Check out the full film in the link below:
