Incoming essay comment so as usual be warned. It is very long lol.
I remember picking up the webnovel after the first 2 episodes aired because I was already so entranced by the story and work of LoTM, and the novel just sucked me in even more. I remember reading about Old Neil’s lose of control and death in the novel, and it was the first time in a long time that a book made me cry (I’m currently on volume 5, and so far volumes 1 and 4 are my favourite solely because both volumes had me absolutely emotionally destroyed by the end- when I finished volume 1 I had to put the novel down and couldn’t bring myself to continue reading for a few days, and volume 4 made me sob for a good fifteen minutes after I finished reading it lmao). I knew this scene was coming but nothing could have prepared me for how amazing the donghua would adapt it- if the novel made me cry, the donghua made me sob so hard I actually had to take a moment to myself after the episode finished. The directing, the music, the animation, the VOICE ACTING especially did this scene so much justice and exceeded my expectations. The madness in Old Neil’s voice followed by the desperate pleading and begging, the calmness of Dunn’s voice trying to placate Old Neil, the lack of inner monologues and the solemness in everyone’s voice during the final prayer scene- I seriously can’t get over how talented the VAs are.
Here’s some included facts and extra information regarding this episode and the stuff in the novel that was skipped over or not explained but still relevant without spoilers:
- we first saw the eyes of the Hidden Sage in episode 2, when Klein first activated his Spirit Vision and saw them behind Old Neil- this shows that Old Neil had been hearing the whispers of the Hidden Sage for a while
- as well in episode 2, we see a figure behind Old Neil and later see it again this episode; this is implied to be Celeste, or the thing that will pretend to be Celeste for Old Neil’s ritual (it is discussed in Old Neil’s Mysticism class (can’t remember which one) that spirit channeling and the such should be done immediately upon death, as the longer the spirit is dead, the more likely it becomes unreachable or monstrous- this means that there was a really, really high chance that Old Neil’s ritual would have created a monster from the Spirit World instead of his wife)
- the letter that fell from Old Neil that Klein was reading was the steps and ingredients needed for the Alchemical ritual, not his advancement (this letter also went on to show that despite the ritual needing large amounts of fresh blood from living people, Old Neil used his own blood instead showing that he indeed never harmed others nor ever meant to so he was never lying- this is also why he was sick often. However for a Beyonder lost control, the madness of going berserk would only be a matter of time before Old Neil completely lost all of his sanity and turned into a total monster)
- more signs of foreshadowing include Old Neil in episode 5 asking at the underground market for ingredients for the ritual
- Old Neil bought the talisman from the vendor at the underground market after learning it had Roselle’s text on it (the text translated to “idiot/dumbass” hence why Klein didn’t take it seriously) so that’s why Klein smiled through his tears upon seeing it on the floor
- there were hints throughout this episode and last episode about Old Neil being close to losing control- the lost of his last living friend from his original squad took a toll on his psyche; his sudden cheerfulness and willingness to spend his money despite being known for being stingy; it’s not mentioned in the donghua but in the novel, Old Neil never told anyone in the Nighthawks about his late wife and when Klein learns this, he and Dunn immediately clock onto the fact that Old Neil is acting abnormal and figure out that he’s close to losing control which then leads to the confrontation at Old Neil’s house
- Old Neil’s monster Beyonder form is a lot more gruesome in the novel believe it or not- the donghua had to censor some stuff, but in the novel Old Neil’s ‘body’ is described as pulsating sticky hair, and weird bloody liquid tendrils smeared all over his house, while his head hangs from the ceiling surrounded by eyes (I saw official art for it, but sadly can’t find it anymore but it was pretty gnarly-looking)
- similar to how Old Neil picked up Havre’s flask from last ep, Dunn picked up Old Neil’s glasses, showing that Dunn also carries the habit of collecting the keepsakes of people he has lost. This really hammers in how tragic yet common a Beyonder losing control is, and puts into perspective how truly dangerous and heartbreaking it is to be a Beyonder
- the quote ‘we are guardians, but also a bunch of miserable wretches constantly battling madness and dangers’ is incredibly poignant this episode as the contents of the quote finally make more sense- you could be an amazing person, doing only good and protecting others, but you are always at risk of losing everything including yourself once you are a Beyonder (when I first watched this episode and Old Neil said this quote, I broke down)
- on a lighter note we see more of Daly’s hilarious personality this episode, and I love how they animated her messenger head lol (fyi Daly is another one of my favourite characters so far, she’s funny as hell). The fact that Daly was hailed as a genius for advancing sequences after only 2 years really puts into perspective how insanely powerful and game-changing the acting method is as Klein utilized it from the very start and fully digested his potion in less than 2 months
- the amount of aura they gave Crestet is wild- he is the highest sequence Beyonder we’ve met so far, not counting Azik whose sequence at this point is still unknown. The donghua didn’t show it, but in the novel Klein and Crestet talk more and share information regarding secret organizations and what high sequence Beyonders may be able to do (this showed that Crestet is chill af as well as hammered in how kind the Evernight Church has been to Klein)
- an important fact that is not explained in the donghua but is super prevalent in the novel is that due to the powers of the gray fog, Klein is able to retain his lucidity and rationality when being pulled into dreams or when his dreams are invaded- this means that even if interrogated in a dream, Klein is still able to fool everyone and effectively lie through his teeth while everyone else takes everything he says as truth because people usually can’t lie or hide in dreams (this gives Klein a major advantage over Beyonders of the Sleepless pathway, as well as any other Beyonders that use dreams or hypnotism to gather information)
This is the end of my long-ass comment lol, this episode was too good so I had to yap. Thank you again for the fire reaction, and be ready as things will only continue to escalate from here on out. Also fair warning, apparently episodes 10-13 from the donghua have been leaked online. If you plan on watching on the official release schedule, be very, very careful of leaked spoilers especially on YouTube and other social media. I personally am going to watch based on the official release schedule (I’m already paying Crunchyroll after all so might as well lol)
