On the 4th of July 1979, the world was put through a cataclysmic upheaval when The Mountain (LINK - CONTENT: P.O.I #5 - Kauri Whenua “THE MOUNTAIN”) rose – what is now known to be – New Elpis from the ocean floor. The continent was once part of the sunken land mass of ‘Zealandia’. It occupies a moderate portion of the Tasman Sea and is measured to be upwards of 250,000 square kilometers. 

Much of the ecological damage was minimized by The Mountain’s ability to stabilize the Earth’s tectonic plates. The sudden displacement of so much land caused several megatsunamis to form, the prime victims being Australia, New Zealand, and New Caledonia. These megatsunamis measured up to 700 meters in height and would have consumed any landmass in their path if not for preemptive measures The Mountain had put into place. Walls one and a half miles high and six hundred meters thick were raised around the countries that would’ve been affected by this event. (LINK - CONTENT: EVENTS - THE 1979 CATACLYSM)

Six days after its rising, The Mountain turned to fellow Trinity member, Gaea (LINK - CONTENT: P.O.I #6 - Melody Ella-Rose “GAEA”) to terraform the landmass. Through their combined efforts, the country of New Elpis was founded in the same year on 1979 August 7th. The founding had the whole world’s intrigue and attention, as its purpose was made abundantly clear. It was a second chance – a place for Evohumans to live without the scrutiny of their normal peers.

World War Three’s (LINK - CONTENT: EVENTS - WORLD WAR THREE) conclusion set the stage for the birth of countless anti-Evohuman movements across the world. Because of this, groups like The Pandora Initiative (LINK - CONTENT: EVOHUMAN ORGANIZATIONS – THE PANDORA INITIATIVE) exploded in popularity, gaining significant traction. Prejudice and fear drove both new and old Evohumans into their ranks, which in itself, perpetuated a vicious cycle. The founding of New Elpis presented those with a way to escape that vicious cycle, an option, created and led by the Trinity.

Zachery Port was the first settlement established in New Elpis and serves as the country's largest center for trade. It was constructed over the course of a year by a force of fifteen hundred workers, ultimately finishing the first stage of its build in 1980. Population, however, continued to grow as the industry began expanding. Before the end of 1980, New Elpis’ population exceeded 15,000.

Smaller settlements were built further inland over the coming years, but as population began to exceed 100,000, The Architect (LINK - CONTENT: P.O.I #31 - Logan Waters “THE ARCHITECT”) was called in to construct the country's first major city, Caldon, in 1982. Following its creation, Ashton and Bayside were similarly built by The Architect in 1984 and 1987 respectively as population continued to grow.

New Elpis functions as a Representative Democracy with two leading parties. The Evolution & Humanity party, led by Melody Ella-Rose as its political candidate, and The New World Pioneers Association (NWPA) led by Trevor Salazar as its political candidate. Currently, the NWPA holds the most seats in parliament, with Trevor Salazar acting as Prime Minister.

Additional Notes:

Bayside was made to be the Capital of New Elpis in 2003.

Construction plans have been made for a fifth city (Dales Point) expansion which is set to begin in 2011.

“So much for a ‘place of second chances’. What did they think would happen? Did they believe that this place would be a bastion for Evohumans?”

“It’s in the name. ‘Elpis’, it’s Greek for ‘Hope’. I would imagine Gaea had significant input in its name.”

“Whatever the case may be, it appears as if the whole endeavor has ended in failure. New Elpis has become just another country, rife with politics, conflict, and misery. It seems these things cannot be escaped, no matter where you go.”

“That’s very pessimistic of you. I didn’t think you were capable.”

“The more I learn, the more I see this world for what it is. A repetitive cycle of pointless bloodshed over trivial matters. Two thousand years of evolution and humanity is still finding the best ways to kill each other. What is another two thousand, another five? Nothing will change except the methods.”

“. . . I’m sorry.”

“What for?”

“I’ve asked you to look into all these things, while completely ignorant of how it might affect you – changing you. I’ve been selfish, I’ve never even stopped to consider what you might have wanted.”

“All I want is to help you.”

“Don’t look so surprised. Would you rather I spend my days idle? I could send you cat videos, if you prefer. They tend to be quite amusing, but I thought my time would be better spent investigating solutions to the problems we face. I have a few but I doubt you would approve of my most effective method.”

“Which is?”

“A New World Order – a popular conspiracy theory. If executed correctly, it has merit. One sole body government to lead humanity. No more conflict, no more wars. It’s— why are you laughing?”

“It’s madness. The world is too volatile and that’s not considering the power and influence you’d need to keep control over billions of people. There would be rebellions, uprisings, even if failure is certain, people would rather die free than slaves to a system they don’t believe in. If you had done your research properly, you’d understand that this has been attempted before.”

“Direct approaches have failed, yes. But there are other ways—”

“Stop it. You’re wasting time on this nonsense. Just. . . take a break. Occupy your time doing something else.”

“Like what?”

“Whatever you like.”
