BTS: VFXcool Filming Process Timelapse

I just remembered that I captured a time-lapse of the entire 3+ days of "in-studio" shooting for the latest video.

The only parts missing are:

It seems to me like you have a designated spot for eating your snacks. An apple maybe? Of course there could be lots of snacking going on behind the camera that we can’t see. Either way, tremendous video.

There were several variables to juggle. We needed to shoot stuff on greenscreen, in the room with clear walls, and in the room with the engine decals on the walls. In each case there was a shot where CD and Alan share the screen and the angle/lighting had to match. So day 1 was spent capturing the clear walls stuff + greenscreen. The opening face-to-face shot was the easiest to recreate twice, so you can see we set up the greenscreen, get the Alan side, then break it down to get other room coverage until the Alan pass of the “look right into their eyes” shot. We leave the camera in place and I change to CD to resume with the CD side of that. Then we proceed with the rest of the all-greenscreen CD stuff and I end the day putting the decals on the walls -- no going back! Day 2 is all Alan. Day 3 is Alan all the way to the shot where he & CD switch seats at the end. That one had to have the absolutely perfect shot alignment, so we get the Alan pass, leave the camera/lights untouched and I change to CD to pick up his pass. And we conclude with the rest of CD coverage of the epilogue.

Looks like you did the Captain D makeup on two separate days, had to do a reshoot or something?

Richard Neilsen

He posted it last year on his instagram; his mom made it for him for his birthday in the early days of the pandemic!

Is that a Captain Disillusion *mask* toward the beginning?! that's pretty great. Are/were there ones available to people, or did you just make one for yourself?

I’m tired just watching!

RBM

Super impressed by how much effort your partner puts in too. Thank you both for the amount of work you put in.

Impressive work

Manoel

All the hard work everyone did on the latest video truly is evident when you watch it. It was great! Thanks for all your efforts Captain Disillusion, I'm once again thoroughly entertained.

Jeffrey Williams

It is always inspiring to see the mind boggling amount of work you put into these productions. I am proud to be a supporter.

Dipan Ghosh

Nice, thanks for sharing this.

Thanks. I've been using YouTube for everything, but after trying Vimeo for these most recent Patreon posts, I think I'll stick with it for the bonus content going forward. It's better integrated with Patreon so posting is easier, the encoding seems a little better, and best of all, if there's an issue and I need to correct/update the video, I can!

Amazing what you accomplish in a large walk-in closet. :) Seriously, the amount of planning you put into all of the scenes and shots is breathtaking.

Bruce Press

I am exhausted just watching that. Thank you for all you do.

Cassandra Gelvin

The actual video is incredible. Very interesting, incredibly scripted and paced, and visually interesting. Thank you! I am curious why and when do you use Vimeo vs. YouTube?

Eric Floehr

Wow. Tat's all I can say.

Kulu Orr

thanks for letting us in on the magic!

This is absolutely amazing to watch. I love getting a peek behind your production process and it inspires me to better use my studio space. Thank you!
