And now for something completely different.

Tell me what ya'll think...

New Video Early Access

Comments

this is really great. i'm a casual BttF fan but the truly entertaining bits were seeing someone's passion and perhaps the nascent beginnings of their VFX obsession :)

Fantastic!

Dominic Mulligan

As a huge BTTF nerd and collector (who happens to also have that exact same light-up Delorean die-cast model), even I learned tasty new behind the scenes trivia. Wonderful idea for a new segment, Cap. Keep up the wonderful work!

Good stuff, can't wait for part 2.

A triumph, bravo!

quarridors

CD Bruh, you can NEVER have too many BTTF references!

Ali

Love your content.

Taylor Hensley

This is such a new direction, but one that feels so familiar compared to your current work. I can't wait to see where this leads you next.

I liked this, I liked this a lot...

Spoons

Very good, it's a good new direction to be going in!

Excellent, I look forward to more of the same.

You should! But since the time concept is elusive in those movies can you really say you "never" watched those movies. Maybe you did next week?

I feel bad because I just realized I've never watched Back to the Future 2 or 3.

Great video, thanks Captain D!

Great video, as always :)

Awesome. Learned a lot.

Charlie Deets

Wow. This really solidifies your knowledge and expertise with hard facts on your passion, while still being entertaining and informational to those who don't know the craft.

I always had a feeling Back to the Future was faked. It's good to have evidence now.

This is honestly a video series I've always wanted but never found. "Behind the Scenes" productions rarely go into the nerdy model-building and primitive technology used. A series dedicated to celebrating the invisible efforts of professional VFX artists and going over a breakdown of their techniques? I couldn't ask for more.

Jasper

So good! Great insight into a turning point of VFX history -- from someone who devoured every Cinefex that came out during that period, I think your take was concise, entertaining and very well-produced!!

I think it's a great direction to change to. Why debunk the amateurs when you can celebrate the amazing? Looking forward to part 2.

Twice I might add and 2 years apart to the same precise date. That's unbelievable!

I'm sure there is something, Kristen. His lower body was numb when editing this, that's gonna lead to some kind of mishap sooner or later. Keep sniffin!

I wish I had constructive criticism for you, but that was beyond fantastic! I appreciate all your work and attention to detail. Thank you!!

Gah, what else? I'm afraid to ask... Don't want to upload a 3rd time :S

Captain Disillusion

Fantastic video, Captain, you managed to explain to a dullard like myself just how many of these shots were produced, but you failed to answer the biggest mystery: how did the filmmakers actually go back in time??

Daniel Staniforth

Great, but I noticed a small error I think....

Chris Barry

This is really brilliant, as always. Can you recommend a book or something about the VFX in BttF, or did you have to do loads of research in different places to put this together? Also, did I hear a bit of Fratelli Stellari in there? And also, I love that you put in the DeLorean door sound effect from the movies when you closed the door of the model in the video.

Richard Irons

Great Scott is this awesome!

Amazing as usual! Can't wait for part 2 :)

All fixed now!

Captain Disillusion

Video removed?

DJ Flea

Excellent stuff, Captain D, and as a fangirl of BTTF since *cough* 1990 *cough* who has (a)made the pilgrimage from the UK to Universal Studios CA for the BTTF ride, (b) sat in one of the REAL CARS from BTTF2 and (c) read/watched pretty much all the behind-the-scenes material on the movies...I really appreciate all the analysis you've done here which is highly entertaining and also endearingly goofy. Can't wait for the second instalment :-D

Sarah O'Donoghue

Another great video. You've done it againian, Alan Melikdjanian.

Thanks! It's really been a couple of weeks of all-nighters, heh. So yeah, I think I'll jus..zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Captain Disillusion

Kewl!

Captain Disillusion

That's actually a motion blur artifact from stabilization. The camera jerked a little at that point :P

Captain Disillusion

This is heavy...

Keith Marrocco

If this is where you're heading... I love it.

Billman Warren

The one time the vid is out of focus is when CD calls for pause. That's heavy...

I am in awe of the progressions & evolutions created to bring the vision to life. I guess it's easy to just take it all for granted. Thank you for making such freakn awesome goodness 🙌🏽

Tango Alpha Roma Nova

Love it! Part 2 can't come fast enough!

Kim Akerø

Loved it. Really loved it. Thanks very much Captain D!

Duncan

Great Scott! This is really good. I like this type of video.

Jerry Heiselman

Awesome, I must admit I haven't seen the movies (I know) but found this interesting nonetheless, the stuff about Zemeckis was also very interesting

Sgtpanda

An absolute labor of love, CD. And such a fitting tribute. It's one of my favorite series, too, for the story, the VFX, and how seamlessly they weave together. Thank you for making this!

Jameson Simmons

Phenomenal. Debunking bttf finally...I KNEW they faked it!

Jamie F

I really enjoyed it. I think you should put some serious thought into making a full length documentary on the subject. The breakdown of how they did the effects is fascinating and with your passion for the subject I think audiences would really respond to it. If it was at TIFF I would jump at a chance to see it.

Useless Duck Company

ARGH, there's always something! I of course meant a 1000 watt :S. Man, I really feel like changing it!

Captain Disillusion

Great stuff! I approve :) But was that really a 1000 *kW* light behind the fake clouds at 2:02?

Brilliant. Utterly brilliant. Also, guessing by the time stamps / zones, you've been up all night editing this. Have a well earned sleep!

Rob Sedgebeer

I want that widdoo Delorean.

If yer a fan of miniatures (as you clearly are) have you seen this? https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/sliceoflifefilm/slice-of-life-original-short-film-homage-to-blade/description

Bizzaro.

love it! really dig this style of video. cant wait for pt. 2

Gondamar

Cool! This is definitely a legitimate way to go for Captain D other than debunking things every single episode!

Timmo Warner

Called it! Video was super cool Captain
