Children of Doom Episode 6

Hey hey, it's (finally) here!

I'm still torn on whether I want to add a bit more - I feel like the sexist frat-bro-y-ness of Duke (both the character and, more importantly, the game) is kind of glossed over here, and there's a part of me that feels like it needs to be properly reconciled with for this to be a fully/honest look back. But also the video's already 37 minutes long and has been so late that I really wanted to get it out the door, soooo... we'll see if I squeeze in a few more changes before it goes public.

Additionally, I've been thinking - I may make a separate post here later to really get eyes on it, but what is everyone's thoughts about this Patreon switching over from per-month to per-project?

My original goal was to ramp up production so much that no matter how much stuff I made everyone was paying a flat fee for anything I did, but that was back when videos were shorter and getting content out the door monthly (and potentially ramping up to multiple videos as a result) was more feasible. These days they're much longer productions that involve more research and moving parts, and the videos are stronger for that, I think, but (as you've all seen) it's been much harder to just hit monthly deadlines. I think switching over to a per-project system may alleviate some of that pressure to get something out the door whether it's ready or not, and would let me focus on making cool things even if it reduces the volume of those things. But I can also see an argument against that, so...

I also prefer per-month. I feel like you'll be gun-shy about hitting the "charge" button if you switch to that model ("is this video good enough to charge for? what's a fair price to charge?"). As long as you communicate, people can adjust their monthly contributions accordingly, e.g. if it takes you 2 months between videos now and that's a problem for some people, they can cut their pledge in half.

I prefer per month. It provides financial predictability for both of us and if any given video takes longer or shorter to make, that's just what it is. I'm not your customer, purchasing videos by their running time; I'm your patron, here to support your work in the wider sense. Emperor Joseph II didn't pay Mozart by the composition, either. :-) All that said, do what works best for you, financially and creatively.

Søren

I'm fine with it being per month even if you don't release anything. I enjoy your videos and they're a nice thing to have in the background sometimes if I'm just doing dishes or things like that. But yeah, I know you addressed it in other videos, but you really do gloss over the frat boy ness and sexism of Duke Nukem.

Jae Shin

I am a fan (and slightly jealous) of the creative videos you make; I'll continue to support your work, regardless of the billing nuances. Choose whichever option helps you sleep better at night.

WRT Payment: Do what makes your particular brain juices sing. I don't think I'm getting ripped off for my money. I would argue that Quake is the 'more important' game in the Mcluahnish sense. Restructuring the way multiplayer games worked meant that the infrastructure came into being to support it, and that's riding the wave of that particular era of internet creativity, before Web 2.0 kicked in. On Duke, I'd point out that his initial characterisation - literally one line - extracted some comedy from the fact that this huge muscley dude who kicked ass also watched Oprah, back in like 1992. Also yes, you done Hexen dirty >:|

Just watched the video. Wow this is good! This series is insightful, entertaining and frankly important historical work. Awesome stuff! This patreon pledge is an easy call.

Daniel Zaleznik

Looking forward to watching this after work. I'm really happy to give you money monthly to support you creating videos regardless of whether you have released something this month or not. I understand that sometimes you have done a lot of work that doesn't neccessarily translate into a video right now. I get the impression that you worry about letting patrons down if you don't release something every month. And maybe per release would make you worry less about that. But does anyone actually complain or unsub when you take a bit longer between releases? The general impression I get is that people are happy with the current model.

RSS

Monthly payments are far more stable for you, so I recommend sticking with that.

Gabriel Sorrel

Happy to support you however you feel is most effective for you.

Respecting and understanding what Quake did more as an adult, while acknowledging Duke 3D was more of what you needed back then as a youngin? I felt that in my bones, man, could not agree more. Wish so much that I still had my old level files.

LGR

Also I would love to know what James Bond cover that is at the end.

Argus

I’m here to give you money because I like what you do and what you’ve already done. I feel no dissatisfaction with my patronage.

Argus

Whichever way actually gets you more support is the one I prefer. I'm absolutely fine with paying for months with no videos and I wanna echo everyone else and say that my support is not dependent on how much/how often you make videos. Rest up sometimes please!

Sounds like the pressure to put out more content b/c of a monthly patreon model is self-imposed, but that doesn't make it any less real. Add my voice to those that say "deadlines" aren't really a factor in my monthly contribution. My only hope for whatever model works best for you is that you permit me to keep my contribution at (at least) the same level.

Daniel Zaleznik

Either works for me. As some have said, my pledge is for the creator, not specifically the content, however if it helps you to put the best you can put out without worrying about the deadline, then I'm all for the per-episode charge!

I tried to play through strife a few years ago, it really seemed to be trying to do things just out of its reach. I'd love to see a proper contextual dissection of it

I have recently heard CGP-Grey argue that switching to monthly payment has taken the pressure of since he no longer has to worry about "wasting time" on small videos like the Blips here, because he would often mark them as "not counting" for pay per video.

Sven

I'm happy for you to keep payment on a monthly basis; I'm enjoying the longer videos, and if they take more time and work then you deserve to be paid for that. This video is a delight as always.

Havelock

I think I'd rather pay per video if it takes the pressure off.

I would advise against doing more work for less pay.

Ian Danskin

A little surprised you didn't cover Strife at the end. My recollection from when I played the demo back in '96 was that it didn't feel like anything else at the time. An FPS/RPG, but without the sluggish feel of such games. It had a bit in common with Tek Wars in that it felt different because not everything was trying to kill you. As I never played the full thing I don't know how long that lasts, or how quickly it becomes a standard FPS, but I recall moving around the early neutral space and it being amazing. It was a feeling I didn't encounter again until Deus Ex finally truly realised the concept in 2000. It stands out as something both different and also too early to really pull off its ambitions.

Quitch

I echo the 'I don't care' on the charge method. I don't pay monthly for a product--I pay monthly to support YOU and your creative process. I don't feel misused or "like I'm paying for nothing" if I don't get a video per month. That said, if it would make YOU feel less pressure, switch away. But don't cut your income just to make us feel better--we support YOU, on YOUR creative schedule. This is patronage, not a transaction for a product.

SoldierHawk

I support creators that use either method, so I'm also fine with either. Use whichever approach feels better & more sensible for you, Chris.

Toni DoVale

I trust that you're working on things even if you don't necessarily release a video. If you can get past your fear of the pressure to release I have no objection to you keeping it montly, but giving projects the time you think they need to breathe.

Sethzard

I don't have strong feelings either way on per-month vs per-video. (I don't expect you to start pumping out 10 videos a month or whatever.) My pledge will stay either way!

Gem Newman

I am fine with you taking the time to create these awesome videos, and if a month or three's subscription goes to funding one video, I don't mind. (But if changing to per project would alleviate the pressure you put on yourself and perhaps aid in creation, that's fine, too.)
