What does it mean to Player Character?

Hey all,

Here's the draft for this month's video! Sorry it took two months to make, but it's almost 1.5x as long as normal, so hey!

Anyways, let me know what you think - my current plan is to maybe clean it up and refine some bits that I'm not super happy about and release it to the general public later on during the work week, so if you see anything that seems off/bad/etc, let me know! In the mean time I'm just gonna clean up some wonky arguments and add some graphics that are missing. Also, Civilization 6 is missing from the credits - I always miss one.

Anyways, it's good to be back! After this I have to play catch up on looking at some of the great games from the past two months!

Also missing from the credits: Whichever Mass Effect you are using at 26:00. I'm sort of surprised it didn't come up much, but then everyone has written its morality meter into the ground, so it's not missed much.

Interesting, people are pretty fast to identify with their player characters ("I died", not "Mario died"). And even want their money back, if a scripted event with that character doesn't reflect their self image (baptizing scene). Quite absurd! You don't get that response when the game is about killing people or steal cars; something they wouldn't consider part of their identity either (hopefully).

I like it, but then I basically always like your videos. At the end (around 26:20) when you say "So those are what I would argue are the current three dominant approaches ..." I found myself feeling that I'd like a quick recap of what those three approaches were. Perhaps with a pithy name/description of the three approaches - you already do that with "role-flexible PC" In a video this long people's attention's are always going to drift somewhat, and so (at least for me) the approaches kind-of blended into each other, so I guess I would have appreciated something like title cards or something to help demarcate.

Very Nice. This report from Project Horseshoe 2017 might interest you (unlikely to change the video in any way but exploring many of the limitations you touch on.) https://www.projecthorseshoe.com/reports/featured/ph17r5.htm
