Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus (Spoilers)

Yikes, this one kind of spiraled out of control and somehow became my longest episode ever.  Didn't plan on that, I just sort of had poor self-control with regard to editing this month.

Anyways! Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus is a really well written game full of well realized characters (even if BJ is the only one really given an opportunity to grow or have much depth).  Much like Mafia 3, I think it falls into this weird category of AAA game that is very, *very* much story driven, leading to an entire development team working towards a cohesive thematic goal - from animators to cutscene directors to level designers, everyone seems to be interested in selling this setting, these characters, this story.  I do think, though, that like Mafia 3, the gameplay gets hurt a little bit - not to the point where it's unplayble, but the difference between, say, DOOM (which doesn't give a toss about story in favor of focusing on gameplay) and Wolfenstein II is really remarkable.  The mindset of the developers is clearly leaning one way with one team and another way with the other.

As a result there's a fair bit of thematic meat to chew in this game!  ...It just doesn't tend to show up as gameplay, really, which is more or less what you'd expect: sneakin' around and stabbin'/shootin' Nazis.  And I guess that's rewarding in its own way.

Regardless, enjoy the video!  And uh, probably maybe don't watch it at work.

Interesting. Didn't Bioshock Infinite play with the same ideas about the alternative universe where old habits of US citizens are running wild? I remember their take on this to be way more cynical and also aging better.
