Deus Ex (Spoilers)

The Summer of 0451 continues with Deus Ex!

This episode ended up a bit... unwieldy.  I really wanted to tap in how the game has changed in ways both good and bad since its release in 2000.  At the same time, it's a game I've been wanting to cover in the abstract since I started this show, and I think I may have jam-packed a few too many digressions in there - I think this is the longest single episode I've ever done!

What I think Deus Ex did best, and what you touch on at the end, is provide you with choices without making them Choices. You can kill Anna early, but the game doesn't tell you this. Paul can live, but you have to realise that him telling you to leave is not a game instruction. Not to go all old person, but in a time of objective markers and minimaps with paths, it's something I miss terribly. I also appreciate the lack of gamification of certain systems like stealth. If you choose path A, it's because you though path A best, or because you found it, not because you were min-maxing the XP bonuses (yes, I'm looking at you Deus Ex: HR)

For real, at this point I can't hear a line from Bob Page without thinking of The Recut. "Old men. Warning. Warning."

"I may have jam-packed a few too many digressions in there - I think this is the longest single episode I've ever done!" I'm getting seriously hyped now. :-D
