Thief (1998)

Hey all! Here's this month's main episode! Next month's gonna be a little weird- I'm going to hit up GDC in the middle of March so either the short episode of the main episode might be kicked around the schedule a bit. Anyways, as always thanks for helping make the show possible!

I've been waiting for an episode on Thief for a long time. Great job! An explanation for the fact that the casino/thieves' den mission feels like filler is that it was not part of the original game, but was added together with other new levels to the re-release named Thief Gold, which is the edition that you can purchase online now. By the way, talking about confusing levels: did you find the "Little Big World" secret area in Constantine's mansion (1st visit)? It's almost as big as the rest of the map, and it is... well I have no words for it. I kinda miss this confusing expansiveness in contemporary games.

TheMich

I've always considered Thief to be a voyeurism fantasy -- you break into forbidden places, observe people, read their letters, overhear conversations, etc. Personally, I actually like Thief 2 a bit more. It has a tighter focus as a thieving simulator and it's even more noir than the first one, although it lost some of the medieval steampunk charm of the predecessor. There are a couple of interesting pieces that delve into Thief's design, should someone be interested... Warren Spector and Doug Church talk about the differences between Thief and Deus Ex at GDC 2002: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9uQEBSgf_cU Thief postmortem by Tom Leonard: http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/3355/postmortem_thief_the_dark_project.php
