Good Game?

Hey, folks. I'm still hard at work and there will be an uptick in post drops over the next couple of months to reflect some of what I've been doing, but I thought it would be fun to tease a new series of articles I'm working on.

Ideally, I will carve out the time for these to be turned into podcasts and/or video essays, but so that they don't get lost entirely, I'm going to share them all, here, first, as essays for you guys to read. They'll be fairly lengthy, but I hope this will represent the sort of content (other than new PO games and material) that you're really here for.

I'm going to be looking at some new and emerging miniatures wargames that are in the same kind of space as the Horizon Wars range, reading the rules and asking "is this a good game?" Note that these will not be "how to play" articles or battle reports or even playtests. Some I will actually play. Some I will not. But they will look at what's interesting or novel in their mechanics, how those mechanics gel with the overall theme of the game and what I think of their general presentation as to whether they meet my standards for a "good" game.

Spoiler: most of them are going to. But hopefully you'll see that whilst my standards for a "good" game are pretty broad, my expectations of a "great" game are much, much higher.

First up in few days will be Trench Crusade. This will be followed by BLKOUT, which has already featured in some of my writing. After that, we'll do Full Spectrum Dominance. I have a list of other games I plan to look at, but haven't yet decided which they'll be.

$20 for a PDF is a bit steep! If I can get a couple of videos up, I might ask if I can get a review copy. I paid for FSD at $10 because I know Giacomo and don't mind giving him some money. But if you have a copy, DK, and fancy sharing or trading for ones I've already printed out, give me a call.

I was also wondering if 1490 Doom would work in a sci fi setting. Though rules not cheap.

I'm felling a bit mixed on Trench Crusade so far, too much Mordhiem baggage? Been reading Spectre Operations as a replacement for Skirmish Sangrim (bit samey, but still like the activation) for hard sci-fi combat - couldn't get on with Tomorrow's War. Looking forward to seeing your thoughts.
