Weapon Upgrades
Added 2023-10-13 08:00:03 +0000 UTCThis is an area I'm sure lots of you are interested in, because everyone likes their boomsticks! I put a great deal of thought into what types of sci-fi weapon actually felt like they belonged in Horizon Wars: Midnight Dark. For quite a long time in playtesting, laser weapons were basically only harassing weapons that messed up sensors and suchlike. But eventually I decided that they needed to be "proper" weapons (because the game is, after all only hard-ish sci-fi).
Something else that I took into account when thinking of weapon upgrades was that, in this edition, these weren't just for mechs. Any element can take any of these, so I had to come up with weapon upgrades that would be as viable in an infantry squad or on tank or even on an attack helicopter. This, of course, is why they don't have fixed costs but, instead, have a cost based on the value of their F stat.
Anyway, enough preamble. Here's the table:

You can only have one of these!

Other than (3), which is a good suggestion, the answers to all of the other questions are elsewhere in the text. It's always "increase by +6" and reduce by -6". This is the case in all of my books and is commonplace among designers. You can't reduce a stat to less than 2 in mustering. Rounding is always up.

An F1 unit could get free Lasers otherwise 3) Rocket: "gains the Indirect trait for this attack" is probably a better wording, more consistent with Missile etc. 4) Smart Missile: Is the cost rounded up or down?
