I think you're spot on with the need to create a safe environment. My eyes have been opened recently to how unsafe the male world can seem. It will take a lot of uncomfortable but necessary discussions with clubs to help change entrenched attitudes.

I watch female gamers in MMORPGs, open world RPGS, FPS games and others and they seem to have no problem with the principle of direct conflict in itself. Female roleplayers seem as likely to resolve a problem with a fireball as a male roleplayer.

2021-03-27 14:10:35 +0000 UTCAround here, on our boardgame community, we have close to 20% of it composed by women. They are so numerous, that they had their own (an exclusive) let's play boardgame day a couple of years back. Asking several of them, they like games (boardgame, videogames, etc), but they generally prefer games with less direct conflict. Management, bluff, puzzle and even betrayal games are fine. "Punch in your face" games are not. One of those, a very good friend, even tells me that if the theme is of conflict (war, battles), it will sway her away even if the mechanics are "push your luck" or an "action". Fantasy battles less so. So mages and Dragons fighting are more fine than troops with guns.
