Why does play testing always start our looking like Crafts for the under 13s?

I'm getting Infinite Dark onto the tabletop again, today, for the first time in months. The last time we were here, it was a playable game but, ultimately a forgettable experience too much like a straight re-skin of Horizon Wars. I'm five turns into a solo game in which I simply have to manoeuvre around four obstacles and it's already more engaging by far.

If you look past the asteroids, against the polka dots, you'll see my little space fighter, which has just performed a tight manoeuvre and is about to head back into the field for the most complicated part of this mission.

The objective is to complete the course in the fewest possible turns.

EDIT 1 - Movement proves to be a lot like driving a car on a frozen lake, which pleases me.  It's got that sense of momentum being a resource you have to manage, without making it too likely that you'll just shoot off the side of the table, which is always a risk if you try to make a spaceship game *too* Newtonian.  Just looking at whether to let asteroids (and other ships) provide a gravitational effect to force you to shed momentum if you're within a number of inches of another space object equal to or less than its mass...

Pretty much like that, yeah.

So is movement like in the asteroids video game with momentum in the direction you fired thrusters, irrespective of the direction the ship may face later in the turn? That would be kinda cool, though I’m guessing replicating the movement of asteroids completely would be to fiddly.

My wife hates the fact that I love The Range. But they also stock my favourite brand of spray primer!

I have been known to dig around the sales and bargain bins in Hobbycraft and The Range to see if any crafty bits look like fun components...
