Precinct Omega Weekly Miniatures News Podcast #5 - 29 May 2020 - The Elephant in the Room!

Or possibly the swan, if you've been following earlier posts...

But it is impossible to ignore the giant that is GW, especially in a week when they announce the release of their ninth edition of Warhammer 40,000.

How did they get so big?  What was the strategy that put them in the dominant position they hold?  How did I work out that they have a 97% market share?  And - the biggest question of all - why, exactly, do people choose to play Warhammer 40,000 when there's a far superior game like Zero Dark available instead?

Answers to all these and more in this week's podcast!

I'm going to start to release these on Fridays for my patrons and put them out publicly on Podbean on Mondays.

Comments

You make a fair point, and an exploration of buyer decision-making psychology in the market would be an interesting discussion. But as my weekly podcasts are pushing towards an hour long already, I think that might have to wait for another day.

Great episode! I finally got to go out for a reasonable length drive today so it gave me something to listen to. While I agree with the "sunk cost" comments, the logic of effort and money invested in a miniatures game compelling someone to continue playing is not a good reason. However some people aren't making a stop wargaming Vs continue 40k decision, they are considering a change of game Vs continue 40k. It's not the sunk cost that puts them off switching, it's the new cost in time and effort to start playing a new game that puts them off. Add in the later arguments in your podcast on brand, opportunity etc you can easily see why staying with 40k is the safe approach if you want to stay being an active gamer.
