Double Secret Top Tier Meeting Post!
Added 2019-12-13 09:01:00 +0000 UTCHello, double-secret Top Tier patrons...
One of the things I wanted to do with you guys, given how generously you are already supporting Zero Dark, was to find out if you had any bright ideas - either from your experience of backing other Patreon campaigns or just off the tops of your heads - about what else I could be offering to encourage new patrons, or to encourage more existing patrons to raise their backing up to $5/month.
I already plan to make more videos like the one already released. How was that? Other than it being a bit amateurish (bear with me), was the content the kind of thing you were looking for?
I'm trying to avoid "Kickstarter-style" one-off things that people could get, like their hero featured in the rules or whatever, because that doesn't support monthly backing. The Monthly Mini Draw is great because, although it costs me a little of the backer money, it also provides content in the miniature, the painting process and the manufacturer to get people interested. But I only have so much time I can spend painting rather than writing and playtesting.
So, suggestions are eagerly solicited.

OK, I'll have a look at this point-by-point: (1) I'd love to go into the "why" stuff, but what's your preferred medium for this? I can do a written blog post, a podcast or a video. Just let me know which you'd prefer. I'll stick up a poll for all the patrons to vote on. (2) Discussion about the rules would be great, but are people really going to use a discord or similar? I've tried having forum threads and similar about Zero Dark and it was pretty much just me talking into the wind with maybe one or two other people occasionally saying "hm, sounds interesting". It's also a bit like me doing Horizon Wars battle reports. Sure, I can do them, but what does it say about a game that it's only the author making review content? I kind of feel that, if this stuff isn't organic, it's artificial. But discord is new to me and apparently is quite good for this sort of thing so, if there's an interest, I'll set one up. Apparently you can have different levels of access or control or whatever, so patrons can have more exclusivity whilst still making it open to anyone who's interested. (3) Prizes are cool and I can probably get some backing from a few manufacturers who might provide me with some samples to give away as unpainted minis. Perhaps I could have two Monthly Mini Draws: one for a painted mini of your choice for the $5+ patrons, and one for an unpainted mini of *my* choice (perhaps you can choose form three, each month) for the $3+ backers. Thoughts? I don't know whether, short of actually just digging through the records, I can see whether someone has backed for X months or a total of $X. At least one patron has declined payment a couple of times, but I only know that because I've been through the records.

2019-12-16 11:11:05 +0000 UTCJonathan is having trouble getting Patreon to retain his posts, which he's taken up with Patreon, but in the mean time, here's what he wanted to add: This is the first and only Patreon campaign I have backed, so it's hard to give you comparisions. I like the content so far: Stories, Pictures, Design Blog, Videos. It does all feel a bit one-way from you too us, to a certain extent that's expected with a Patreon but it would be nice to have a way of promoting more discussion amoungst the backers. I agree with Stefan's comments about understanding more of the "why" behind the design. Either through videos or through the Design Blog. Getting to see more behind the scenes info about how the game is designed and not just early access to the rules would definitely appeal to me. I've seen other miniature game related Patreons offer prizes that are less time consuming to provide. Painting a miniature for someone does allow you to create some good content during the painting process. However mailing out unpainted miniatures/free dice is quick and would be an option to create a few extra rewards, if the number of Patrons supporting at a higher level grows the chance of winning the painted miniature will drop so a few extra prizes may help. Or you could offer these rewards for other things, eg. after 6 months as a top tier patreon you send them something.

2019-12-16 11:10:09 +0000 UTCGreat suggestions, there. I'm a Discord virgin, but I'll have a look and see whether it's got a role to play. Videos tends to flick my anxiety button something awful. I've recorded loads and binned them. I might be able to livestream through either twitch.tv or Vimeo on a patrons-only basis. But it would be helpful if I had some patrons ask some "why?" questions to get me started. I can think of a few, but I'd hate to do a video and not answer the one question you wanted me to... Painting videos are... ugh. Doing them right requires things like having a tidy painting desk and, like, a plan for painting stuff rather than my approach which starts with "what paint is within reach right now?" and ends with "yeah, that'll do".
