Cynthia and Dawn were watching a movie one night. There wasn't much they could do together given Dawn's size.
Dawn had a slight itch on her nose, and as you do, she scratched it, an inconsequential instinct, to humans at least.
Cynthia glanced down at Dawn. "Make sure to wash your hands later."
"Why? Maybe there was a single germ on my nose ooo so scary haha." Dawn replied insincerely.
Unbeknownst to Dawn, she had indeed picked up a few germs from her nose onto her finger. To most this wouldn't matter, but to the microscopic girl Iris who had been trapped on Dawn's finger for days now. This was a death sentence. One bacteria had accidentally scooped Iris up onto one of its tendrils. By this point she had become so small that she'd be considered microscopic to this bacteria. If it could see of course.
The bacteria wasn't big enough to have much of a noticeable gravitational pull to Iris but the drop she'd face if she jumped off the Bacteria was terrifying in comparison to her. She was trapped
But that was the least of her problems. This Bacteria had been carrying a bacteriophage virus, one of the smallest organisms known to man, something so small that it isn't even considered alive. But to Iris, it was one of the biggest things she had ever seen, a towering kaiju. And just her luck, it had landed right in front of her.
She stopped and looked up in shock for a moment, but then turned and ran screaming. At this point she knew her place. Everything was dangerous to her, she can never let her guard down again for the rest of her miniscule life.
Her attempts felt futile when the virus took a single step, shaking the ground beneath her and almost causing her to fall over. She tried sprinting as fast as she could but the ground beneath her was squelchy like mud and it'd take minutes of running just to travel the equivalent of one step from the virus.
Every moment of her new life she thought she'd faced the worst, but she just kept finding new horrors. Was this it? There's no way she could escape and she knew that. The virus luckily didn't care about her, but she had taken science class before, she knew that soon the virus would inject its DNA into the bacteria and multiple virus duplicates would start to burst out from underneath her feet, each one an unstoppable killing machine. But she had to keep running, she had to live, that's all that mattered to her now, she didn't matter to anyone so why should she care about anything else?

This is a continuation of The Dragon in the Shadow 2 and Friends in Small Places!
Iris continues to shrink, now being so small that she's practically an ant to a bacteriophage virus at less than 1 nanometer. That virus is sitting on top of a relatively towering bacteria, which itself was just moved from the 6 cm Dawn's nose onto her finger unknowingly.
And yes that’s a picture of a real finger. Might’ve been a bit much. ![]()
Fun fact most humans have around 39 trillion micro-organisms living on them, that's about 5000 times the population of earth! ![]()
