FLEXI Customizable Modular Dragon Set EARLY ACCESS

Hey everyone!

I am SUPER excited about today's release and have been working on it all this past month to make sure it's perfect. The modular dragon set (Or Mod-a-dragon as the Beta Testers called it) is a set of interchangeable dragon pieces so you can make a variety of different combos for different looking dragons and scale it up or down to make a huge variety of sizes! There's so many possibilities with this baby and I'm stoked about it!

Filaments are D3D white and black, Hatchbox mint, Ziro Afterglow, and Numakers Nuclear red, all with hand painted details. Multicolor 3MF files included.

The base set of body joints can be pretty tight going into the body but are super sturdy once put together. A set of slightly looser joints that are easier to put together is also included!

Print recs:
2-3 walls
5-15% infill
No supports
Add brim if needed
Scale up or down with as many pieces as desired (Tested between 60% and 300%)

I hope y'all like them!

Thanks so much for all your support <3

I use author on the ball joints, no supports. Was having bed adhesion issues without the brim. 5mm was sufficient. I also hit the print bed with hairspray between prints.

POTSy here as just part of a much broader range of dysautonomia issues. Feel free to message if you wanna chat about disability stuff sometime, I have been doing disability activism for more than 25 years around the whole momming gig. From some of your movements in videos and poses in stills I thought you might have hEDS when paired with seeing your wheelchair. I need to print your dragon wheel for my chair and to see if I can come up with some other kids, but my printers have been busy printing flexi & fidget dragons for a Society for Creative Anachronism event tomorrow. Been posting some of the photos on my FB and saw you reshare one or two (this is Ahmie typing). I am horrible about getting stuff listed on (or promoting) our family Etsy but I will probably list some of the pride dragons on there next week if I don't get too swamped (my husband is on Spring break as of two hours ago so MAYBE I can get his help with that). We have a Creality K1 Max at home (our family room is a mini maker space) and he has a K2 Plus in his classroom so if you wanna test out some larger wheelchair wheel (maybe compatible with bicycle wheels?) designs I would be happy to test them out on our equipment.

Yeung Family

Those are great ideas for new pieces to add!! Thanks for the suggestions! And I'm so glad you like them!! I actually have POTS and am currently in the process of possibly getting an EDS diagnosis as well lol. Hi fellow spoonie <3

Kirsten McKenzie

The filenames are pretty well done. I'm focusing mostly on creating multicolored dragons by printing the body pieces in different colors, and I like doing a European style dragon (four footed limbs plus a pair of wings). For that I need one "dragon body wings" and two "dragon body arms", I like a shorter "neck" to let the head be able to "pillow" on the arms so I only do one small body part between the upper arms and head, the wings body part right behind the arms part, a large body part, the second "body arms" part for the legs to attach to, then one each L, M, and S body pieces with the selected tail attached to the S. That's 9 "body" parts, plus head, R & L arm, R & L leg, R & L wing, and tail. At default size, I can fit all those on the bed of our Bambu A1 Mini if I'm doing all the parts in one color (I prefer to print parts in single filaments because having a bunch of "poops" around gets overwhelming to me). Hope that helps! Oh and 5pct infill, 3 walls, autobrim (the ball connector part needed it on my setup) is working really well for me. If you've got hand strength issues definitely print the looser set, assemble from the head back is easier on my hands, set them in an angle with the bed sides closer together rotating upwards with force as you connect them, and warm them a bit (try a hair dryer) if it's still difficult to get them together - I've been testing out the process so I can delegate assembly to my kids.

Yeung Family

Sorry if this was already asked, I am dyslexic and am not spotting it on a read through of comments. Could you make a few additions to this set? Notably I'd really like to be able to put the arms on the same piece as the wings (so four attachment points on the one piece, two upper and two lower), and I'd also really like to be able to make two-headed dragons... maybe even three-headed ones for when I'm feeling indecisive about which of these wonderful heads to use (the four-horned one is my current favorite). I'm grateful for these as so many other flexi dragons are problematic with my fragile skin (I have hypermobile EDS), and the lack of sharp pointy bits let me enjoy these more. I'm making some in the Disability Pride Flag colors.

Yeung Family

Is there a list somewhere explaining which piece is what? and how many of each link we will need to print? Since it's so customizable, its kinda hard to tell which is needed vs whats interchangable. Don't know if that makes any sense.

Brianda Dray

Yayyy great to hear! No supports for this guy at all :) And yes, definitely!

Kirsten McKenzie

I love this dragon and can finally print it. I have 2 questions: do you use support for the ball joints, because mine fall off all the time. And are you planning other dragon heads and tails?

Lidia Heinzel

Try setting in the bottom of the joint and then roll the rest into the socket :) There's also the looser version you can try and I'll be adding a slightly looser version 2 soon!

Kirsten McKenzie

I canโ€™t get any of the pieces to fit together ๐Ÿ˜ž the ball joints wonโ€™t fit into the holes

Melissa

When you download the file it should be in a compressed ZIP folder that you can extract and then there should be 2 folders with all the pieces, one with standard and one with looser pieces :)

Kirsten McKenzie

I wonder if putting vasoline on the joints would help? I am still printing mine so I haven't put anything together yet

Shana

Could you direct me on where/how to find the individual stl files? My programs don't give me an option.

Beth Petkunas

I used a silk PLA which I think is more brittle than regular PLA. I think normal PLA would allow the most flexibility. I want to say PETG is less flexible than PLA. I ended up using a heat gun to help with assembly but you have to be very, very careful or you will totally mess it up using a heat gun. I tried with 15% infill which probably is stronger but a lot less flexible than 5%. Even with 5%, although closer to going together, I felt like it would break if I put it together without the heat gun. Great model, I'll be printing more. Don't think I can post a picture here but I finished a 300% print.

Kenny Birdwell

Definitely agree! They also go in best if you set in the bottom of the ball socket and then roll the top in. Also you can check and raise your infill or wall settings if needed to help them be stronger!

Kirsten McKenzie

All 4 dragons pictured have different variety and number of parts to appear differently :) I usually use XL and L for between the legs and wings, L and M to S for tail, and S and M for a neck.

Kirsten McKenzie

They do best if you set the bottom of the ball into the socket first and then roll the top up into the socket. You can also try the looser pieces and also add walls or infill for extra strength!

Kirsten McKenzie

Yay, I'm happy to have you! I did the head, a S, M, then arms and wings, then L, then XL, then L, back legs, and then L down to M and S as many pieces as you want

Kirsten McKenzie

Hi! i just joined your patron and I'm excited to get printing! My question about the modular dragon is... what order did you attach the parts in?

Wanderer-found

would it be possible to show print numbers of parts to make the dragons with the part name

Draco Gold

I printed those numbers and Iโ€™m having trouble figuring out where the xl goes. Looking at the top view of the while dragon it looks like there are more than those numbers listed but I canโ€™t quite figure out the order.

Rebecca

Which filament did you use? I used PETG and I broke at least half of my pieces trying to assemble.. I am so gutted right now.. :-(

Ra

I am so sad... I printed it all out and when I tried to assemble it, I broke at least half of the pieces... Is there a trick to snapping them all together?

Ra

Would recommend you test fit a couple of pieces before printing the whole thing, especially if you are not using the looser joint models. I printed the regular one and both wings broke trying to put it together. Just broke a small piece trying to join it to the head. Maybe the filament I'm using, printing the looser joint parts now to see if they go on easier. The legs and arms went on without issue printed in the normal model. Note I printed it at 300%.

Kenny Birdwell

Could you direct me to where I find the individual stl files? Sorry to be a bother

Beth Petkunas

thatโ€™s amazing!! thank you

Ra

Hey, that definitely sounds like something specific to that slicer or computer having a hard time handling large files. If you're trying to load the 3MF file that has many different pieces so unless you're doing multicolor you may have better luck with loading in the individual STLs! And happy to have you! <3 Thanks for the support

Kirsten McKenzie

This may sound like a dumb question, but how can I get this to download to my ankermake M5? It keeps telling me the "file cannot be larger than 200mb." Do I need to do this strictly from my computer? Will that work? Or am I just out of luck? Btw, I switched to having an account with you instead of STLFLIX.

Beth Petkunas

Nope, none of it needs support :)

Kirsten McKenzie

Do the wings not need supports either? One part is elevated so I didnโ€™t knowโ€ฆ please advise

Ra

Yes, scale all pieces equally :)

Kirsten McKenzie

When making this at 300 do you enlarge all pieces to this?

Melissa

Ok so I am so very new to this. I want to print her 300%. Do I need to scale her in Bambu Studio? Talk to me like I am a child because in this I really am!! LOL! I have been wanting a large dragon for a few weeks now and I saw yours (yes i'm late to the party!) and instantly fell in love!!

Shana

Starting one now. How many parts is the biggest one you've made and what is the order of parts. I've been getting myself confused how it all connects together.

musicmancs

The different sized pieces are just so you can taper the body proportions as needed for like the tail, neck, ect. The shoulder and wing body connector pieces are one size since proportionally those would often be thicker.

Kirsten McKenzie

Aww yay!

Kirsten McKenzie

hi i am trying to build it now but all the pieces are confusing me a bit. does it matter what parts for the body? i saw there is a small body piece are their small legs and arms to? idk if i am overlooking them lol

Deanne Murray

Waiting on a new build plate then im definitely making one of these. But definitely need a horse or pegause one to take to my model horse shows!!!

dragongoddest .

Here that one is! https://cults3d.com/en/3d-model/jewelry/modular-dragon-bracelet

Kirsten McKenzie

She's about 46 inches long!

Kirsten McKenzie

No, the bracelet one will be on Cults3D later today! :)

Kirsten McKenzie

It's actually a gold acrylic on red PLA! :) Hahah thanks! They always like to be involved xD

Kirsten McKenzie

How long is this beauty? Your work is awesome.

3D Chaos

Is this the one that can be a bracelet?

Mary Howard

Where did you get that gold filament, or what is it called exactly? I love the texture of it. Also I love the fact that the doggo's were in the background, and it looked just like you had another pet in your arms!

Vera's Arts and Dice

Thanks!!

Kirsten McKenzie

cool

Mr.Pyro

Yay! I hope you enjoy <3

Kirsten McKenzie

Thank you very much for this info i now have it set up with 9 plates to print the 300% Scale

Etzweiler Goodz 3D Printz

Already printing! I am so stoked for this.

17Artworks

2 body leg connectors, 1 wing, 4 S, 4 M, 4 L and 1 XL

Kirsten McKenzie

Yessssss <3

Kirsten McKenzie

Yep, 306% specifically! I used light infill so it's pretty lightweight, I think I only used like one and a half rolls.

Kirsten McKenzie

Ok Madam, so my only question is how many of each body piece did you use to make the 300% scale size cuz im trying to set it up on each plate to print her that size. Please and Thank You!!!!

Etzweiler Goodz 3D Printz

This is awesome, going to have to print one as soon as my printer is free in 300%

Callys3DPrinting

The biggest white one is 300%? and what was estimate weight if you remember? I don't know how many kg of one color i have to order :P I love them ๐Ÿ’• definitely going to print one!

Tonia Kowalczyk

Awesome! I am about to start my first plate of parts to try this out. I absolutely love this concept. Do you think you will release more modular parts in the future? I'm super excited!!!

Jocelyn Kessinger

Yes!

Kirsten McKenzie

Is "modular dragon body arms N" the piece you use to connect legs as well as arms?

Jocelyn Kessinger

Omg yessss! Do it!

Kirsten McKenzie

Yayyy perfect!

Kirsten McKenzie

I have never wanted to print a 300% so bad in my LIFE!!!!! I need him for my office!!!

Tori Davey

Yaaaas, just in time! This will work perfect for a custom order I got in! ๐Ÿคฉ
