How to Honor the Memory of Someone You Respected

I had seen several of David Lynch's films and TV shows, but I hadn’t seen Eraserhead.

Now I have, and I can never unsee it.

A lot has been said about David Lynch lately. I built an entire novel on a stray thought I had watching a single shot from his version of Dune. I was nineteen and living in the Pacific Northwest when Twin Peaks hit, and its influence may have warped my entire destiny.

My favorite work of David Lynch is his short film What Did Jack Do? (Available on Netflix.) It is mostly Lynch interrogating a monkey, until the big musical number.

I haven't been able to bring myself to see the new DUNE movies. I hear they're very good, but that doesn't seem like enough to make it worthwhile. Lynch's version may have been an objective failure, but what a GLORIOUS failure it was! I don't think a version that's merely good, or even merely great can ever live up to the impact of Lynch's version. That's a movie that lives in the deep recesses of my mind...

He wasn't pleased with "His version" of DUNE either. There's a scene where Baron Harkonen is celebrating his victory by laughing maniacally while he flies around a jet of stea. then you see one of his underlings working a control box, giving the impression that he is remote-control piloting his murderous boss around the room. I saw that and wondered what that guy's work day was like. The basic concept changed in the writing, but that was the begining of Master of Formalities.

Love some of Lynch's work - Twin Peaks, chef's kiss. His version of Dune though - as a long time fanatic about the books, that movie just hurt me, badly. Not ok. Aaaaand, now I'm curious which scene prompted which book of yours.
