Sculpting a pair of western boots

Lets make these thangs. The way I make shoes is different from any other sculpt I do- I "carve" them out more than the typical sculpting you do with polymer clay, Super Sculpey is fairly firm and easy to carve with a sharp xacto knife. Let's go!

So, I start them out by tracing out the silhouette of the shoe onto a full on brick of super sculpey

I immediately decided this boot was too small, and cut out a pattern piece for a slightly bigger boot.

I cut out the shape, sans heel

They are way too wide, so I shave them down to size.

First thing I do to render the shape is cut out the toe of the boot.

I carve the top of the shoe to be rounded, and will render more later

referencing a pair of boots I own, I trace the sole shape onto the bottom of the block

here's both soles cut out

I then just shave little bits off, rendering the sculpt. This part is a bit hard to explain, kinda just a thing you get a feel for as you practice and look at references

Using the other end of my knife as a tiny roller, I make an indent around the bottom to render out a sole, stopping before the heel

I roll out a small snake, slice a flat side, and cut it in half for the heel, then pop it in place after cutting the connection point at a slight angle

Molded them together, pushed it to an angle, and cut it to length.

I then added a thin sheet of polymer clay to the heel for the dimension, and molded the sole to look seamless.

I added some more clay to the ankle to extend them a bit.

Then, on the bottom, I add some scuffs and a stitch line for detail

And there we go! I'll be making molds of these as alternative shoes for my big bad wolf doll!
