The Rabblelaid Starter Guide to Writing Erotica.

Hello!

I am currently drafting a commission, but I also have Cumbunny part D almost finished. This one is proving tricky to get a handle on, so it might need more feedback than usual!

But today I have a different kind of post!

I’ve gotten a warm response in the past to posts about my writing process, so I thought it might be fun and helpful to write a simple guide for how to give erotic writing a try.

I think it can be a super fulfilling and fun little hobby, even if you never end up publishing or sharing your work. I never would have guessed that I would end up publishing my work publically when I first started, I just wrote and wrote because I was having fun! Even if you think you don’t have the talent to be a great writer, I encourage you to give it a try!

So where exactly to start?

1. Eat your dessert first.

This might seem obvious, but great, fun-to-write erotica springs from your own personal kinks and interests. My advice if you want to try writing Erotica is to sit down and write a juicy, raunchy, white-hot sex scene first. All of the setup and characterization and plot are the vegetables. You will have to do them later on to flesh out the story, but start with the dessert! Try the fun part to see how much you like it. You can have all of the setup and plot that should come before the scene in your head, but there’s no reason to write chronologically when you first start out. My first thing I ever wrote was a scene from Cross Contamination where Renee jerks Daren off while convincing him to betray his daughter. Only after I had a great time writing it did I go back and write the beginning of the series!

2. Live the dream.

Choose a fetish or scenario that you have personally thought about a lot. Spend some time living in that space, just thinking about what turns you on most about that kink or situation. If you like cuckold stories, are you most turned on by the man’s powerlessness? The woman’s betrayal? The bull’s dominance? If you like corruption stories, are you turned on by ruined innocence? By the corruptor’s feeling of power and control? Think about what turns you on most about your favorite scenario, and dream up a situation that pushes that feeling hard. Your first story isn’t a place for subtlety, it’s a place to find your voice. Write characters with the body types and looks you find most attractive.

3. Play with description.

Word choice is hard to teach. It’s more of a feeling than pure right or wrong. What sex acts turn you on to read about? Are there any words that excite you in particular? I had to overcome a hurdle early on of just feeling a little embarrassed by writing super explicit sentences, but the easiest way to push past that is just to give it a try and practice. If you are really stuck on how to translate your ideas onto the page, choose a few favorite stories and read how the author describes sex. You can even copy and paste descriptions into your first scene as long as it isn’t something you plan to share.

4. ABE: Always be escalating

When in doubt about how to start or progress a sex scene, keep in mind that most stories and scenes are more compelling when they ramp in intensity. Start small. What sort of foreplay is happening? Is there tension of some kind between the main characters? How do the participants relate to each other? How can you show that through their physical actions? As you move forward, things should get hotter and heavier. How does the action progress to the “main event” (whether that be sex, a blowjob, etc.)? How do the characters feel about the sex act about to take place? Excited? Nervous? The moment the sex act proper begins is a watershed moment typically. I usually write a pause where the main character reflects on what the act means to them, good or bad. Then, the tension and pleasure should spiral up to a peak of orgasm. The emotional meaning of the scene should come to a head as the sex grows more intense, whether that is betrayal, romance, humiliation, etc. In short, starting the scene with penetration doesn’t give you much place to go. Start slow and ramp up.

My plan is to write a second part of this guide later in the week, about how to flesh out a story once you have a sex scene you like.

In the meantime, I want to encourage any writers, new or old, to drop me a line if you want to talk about writing or get feedback on a story or scene. I’m eager to support other writers in the hobby however I can. My email is grogstoopid32@gmail.com.

I would also love to answer any follow-up questions or discussion in the comments!

Just out of curiosity, I’ve attached a poll. What category do you fall under?

It's further than a lot of people get! There's something special about getting your own thoughts out onto paper rather than just reading someone else's.

That sounds like a great idea! I've never used chyoa, but it does sound like a great low pressure way to try writing some sex scenes without having to worry about setup and character development

I'm not a good writer; dialogue and description are tough for me. But I have written a few stories, mainly because I've had a bunch of ideas over the years that bounced around my head and it was to get them written down. I almost always feel the need to plot the entire thing out before starting to reduce rewriting if I have a new idea. But, to borrow from TS Garp, stamina is important if you want to really write. I don't have much of that either though. So many unfinished stories 😄

If you are curious to try writing something and have it be public and get feedback on it then chyoa dot com (not sure if links are allowed) might be a good starting point. It is a choose your own adventure site so you are able to read stories that tickle your fancy and then write a scene that you enjoy where the characters and plot are set up for you. If others like it then maybe they will continue from where you left off and if not you've still provided a new and interesting twist that someone somewhere might love.
