#3 REMASTER & #93: Metal Gear Solid (1998) Part 3 (Early Access)

Comments

Scrolling through these messages in order on my phone cracked me up. "The backtracking wasn't that bad..." "Fuck that PAL key." Hahaha. But, in your defense, replaying RE2 with James in the recently released remake, I also lamented how LONG you spend in the police station. It feels a bit different when RE does it, because that's ALWAYS been the style of those games, and exploration is part of the game, but the backtracking in MGS never opened new areas, it always just felt like a chore to complete while the production team moved around some elements and got baddies in place for your return. Does that make sense? I think we talk more about it in #94, which you'll get this weekend. Thank you, and your comments are ALWAYS wanted, so keep posting them, Matt! Much love, Alessio

I do understand the frustration with the PAL key though...

I’m not trying to monopolize the comment section here..but I wasn’t a listener when you covered MGS1 the first time, so playing through it while you guys actually are covering it is awesome for me. Anyways, I never really had a problem with the back tracking in this game. It was only recently I noticed how many people actually had issues with it. I don’t think it’s any worse than RE2 running around the police station. You’re in the same places for the majority of it, unlocking more and more as you go. Returning to spots you’ve been many times to gain access to new areas of the station. I always compare these two games because these were the two I was really into at the time. But, I don’t feel like as many people complained about the same sort of design in RE2.

Totally! Feels very in-line with where the series would eventually go.

Also, one of the premonitions in this game I never thought much about was Naomi programming Snake’s nanomachines so that he CAN’T USE HIS WEAPONS in the nuclear storage building. Very MGS4.

Very good point! We'll try to discuss this in the Listener Response portion of the season. Thanks for reminding me, Matt! - Alessio

Metal Gear Mondays

When listening to these episodes it reminded me of something I brought up to Alessio a while back... In MGS1 Revolver Ocelot picks up his hand after Ninja chops it off, so why in 4 does he have liquids arm?? Why would you elect to have a transplant when you have your original limb??!! Ha
