Why the Ferengi Are Star Trek's Best Alien (Yes, Really)
Added 2025-08-10 16:00:16 +0000 UTCIt's finally here! I've been working on this video for the better part of a year. It's not a topic on its face that I think any of you will think will warrant such a big video, but I actually think this might be my most salient Star Trek video about today. Star Trek, to me, is about reaching for a better future, something that seems so far away right now. But the Ferengi, in so many ways, represent us today - unable to see a horizon because of how much our capitalist world has made it seem like it is the only way with no alternative - and yet still find ways of reaching, of finding themselves. Of making something better. That is what Star Trek is always about - and it's why I think they have so much to show us about our path forward to that Star Trek future.

I LOVE DS9 so I’ve been dying for the DS9 “sex” video. I’m thrilled to hear you are so passionate about DS9 that you’ve been working on that video for ages and it’s book length. lol. I’m finally in a position to pay for a Patreon or two a month, and I’m really happy to have my money go to you and the amazing videos you make. They’re definitely worth the latinum.

2025-08-16 21:53:12 +0000 UTCThis took me a couple of days to watch and it was well worth it. The outfit and spots are amazing. Great content as always. You inspired me to standup and start talking about my own identity and subset of a community within the trans community. I even made a presentation that I did at work (one of the ones owned by one of the tech bros). It seemed to touch some folks and inspired me to keep talking, open up a discord community and continue the conversations about how we identify and do our best to avoid the violence of the archive. We even changed our name to reflect who we are. Your work is a major inspiration for me and has given me the strength and bravery to continue forward with my own words to add to the conversation. You're videos always seem to bring out the tears from my eyes, but also the best of who I want to be. Thank you.

2025-08-13 20:13:51 +0000 UTCBeen watching this video over the last three days. Just finished it while starting to crochet a skirt. Been finding things that bring me joy to fight off the dread of fascism. Watching this video while doing so seemed fitting.

2025-08-13 02:44:26 +0000 UTC(Book I'd read.) Thank you for this. I'd forgotten Nog was also a disabled-minority protagonist. Biggest change since watching DS9 has been receiving another hip replacement; it's been a touch difficult. This vid struck in such a tender place, with things I've often considered, & shall be reminder to offer perpetual Three Cheers to Nog as well as yourself (& team). Brilliant, fun, resistive work I'm so grateful you were able to make & share.

2025-08-12 19:32:42 +0000 UTCHaven't seen yet, but 4 hours 42 minutes feels like an aesop about compound interest.

2025-08-11 20:08:24 +0000 UTCHaven't started yet, but I was really hoping Discovery was going to use the Ferengi instead of the Emerald Chain stuff. What better way to assert what you need the Federation to be than compared to the avatars of crisis capitalists? (It could have a been a splinter sect of Orthodox Ferengi).

2025-08-11 00:09:54 +0000 UTCWait, so, over 4 1/2 hours of quality content about Ferengi... And not a single mention of the amazing House of Quark arc? :o

2025-08-10 23:32:53 +0000 UTC(You know, I'll probably predictably have a lot of thoughts on this material, but it's always seemed like Armin Shimmerman had a lot of time to think about the Ferengi since the first script, and he probably had a whole lot to do with grounding the portrayal of them *because* he'd done the more cartooney version. ) (Also on Picard's alternate future humdrum self, I tended to see that as more personal than cheering for authority itself, cause if that was his real ambition, dodging a knife fight probably just would have made him more cowardly about ambition. But it was something different. If he'd gone into *archaeology* rather than astrophysics, he'd surely be passionate about *that* but somehow never found that in that alternate timeline cause he never *grew.* He happened to be very suited to command and that progress was important for *him* to be a full person. )
