1. Children of the Dark: The most primitive of the underground factions, the Children of the Dark are in general more numerous and physically powerful than the others. Led, surprisingly, by an elven druid, their expansion is often stifled by conflict with other groups trying to eke out a living below ground/claim the area for themselves. Among their ranks one might find such creatures as moles, bats, and cave-drakes, as well as other lost monstrosities. If they were able to expand unimpeded they might overwhelm the 'Over-World', or perhaps they are maligned and misunderstood, merely wanting the respect and consideration by the more 'civilized' factions.
2. The Illuminated: Resembling a cult, the Illuminated are a faction made up of bioluminescent creatures, both natural and fantastical, and mutants. Blending science and magic, many of its creations would have made a mockery of ethical oversight were their experiments known. Led by a disgraced former-Zephyr scientist, they have improved the lives of many of the people living underground, for many this gratitude being translated into almost zealous devotion towards their leader. Perhaps if they could offer the surface a similar increase in living-standard, but at what price would it come?
3. Station 69: The smallest of the factions, but it would be foolish to describe them as weak. Based around an underground train station, the community is tight-knit a diverse. Giving shelter to those who need it whether they are a dissenting Illuminated, claustrophobic dwarf, or orphaned Child of the Dark, the Station looks after its own. Unofficially led by one of the leading merchants, other influential groups include the dungeoneering guild, and the Antguard. While they have no direct plans for the surface world, should the presence of the 'Under-World' become known, their role as protectors could easily bring them into conflict with many of the surface groups.
4. Beard Hearth: Though the Dwarven king is irked by their mighty fortress-outpost being referred to as such by the other residents underground, the name has stuck, giving him more reason to regret accidentally challenging a god to a smithing competition, the resulting loss exiling him and his people to a strange new world. Though they focus on mining, the majority of the dwarves are handy with an axe too, making them appear militant when compared to the other factions. Loyal to their friends and prone to excessive festivities, should they wish to test their mettle against any of the monsters roaming the surface, there will likely be further repercussions.
