Rebranding time: help me choose a new name
Added 2025-06-08 09:45:07 +0000 UTCHey everyone!
As many of you know, Manga Downloader recently received its first DMCA takedown notice from Google by Webtoons, and all references to it have been removed from Google Search results. On top of that, I believe the current name can easily be misinterpreted and associated with piracy, which was never the intention. To reflect the tool’s real purpose—creating personal backups of manga you already own access to, for preservation and offline reading—I'm planning to rebrand it with a name that better communicates this mission and avoids unnecessary misinterpretations.
Some name ideas I’m currently considering:
Manga Backup Tool
Manga Archiver
Manga Saver
Manga Preserve
Manga Vault
I'd love your input! I’ve added a poll to this post where you can vote for your favorite option, and if you have a better idea, feel free to drop it in the comments below 😊
Personally, I was leaning more toward the first two, with a slight preference for Manga Archiver, since I think "archiving" is the term that best conveys the idea of preserving something for the future without implying online sharing or access to content you don't own.
Of course along with the new name, I’ll also be updating the project with clear copyright disclaimers to reinforce that this tool is intended for legitimate, personal-use only. You know, the usual moves to try to cover my ass 😅
Thank you for your continued support and feedback, it really helps shape the future of this project! ❤

You just gave me a great idea! It's true that programs written in Java on the web often have a "J" at the beginning of their name, so this is definitely an interesting direction. On top of that, it gives me the opportunity also to create a fun acronym: I was thinking of "JAM", which could stand for several fitting names—like "Java Archiver for Manga", or a more elaborate "Java tool to Archive my Manga", or even a very simple "Java App for Manga" or a fun one like "Just Archive my Manga" 🤣 This would also remove the word "manga" from the actual program name, as many of you have suggested in the comments. And since "JAM" is not only easy to pronounce but in English also means marmalade, I could play with that idea and design a logo with a jam jar dripping over a manga or something like that lol

Also agree with Turtle that removing the word "manga" entirely is safest. If your intent is to avoid future problems, then I'd say really lean into that and make it completely non-exciting and benign-sounding. Like, Personal Media Backup or something (maybe catchier than that, though). Thanks for your work on this.
