To me, Annie's dad is not nearly as bad as Grisha was to Zeke. Annie wasn't his daughter to begin with and he wasn't emotionally abusive like Grisha and Dina were. Not to mention he began to see the error of his ways totally unprompted compared to Grisha who needed stuff to happen and even then was rewarded with a second family. As someone who has experienced a fair amout of abuse in my childhood I can assure you the emotional abuse is ten times more hurtful and leads to more lasting damage than the physical abuse does. Is it that hard to believe that Annie wants to go back to that one person that showed her love in her whole life? Think about what kind of a person Annie was before that one singular moment. They don't show her squashing bugs like that for no reason. She was completely apathetic, didn't care about a single thing, nothing that happened around her, or to her. And then suddenly, everything changed and something mattered for the first time. But before she really even got to experience it, had a chance to see if that new relationship could work out, she had to leave. Of course she would do everything to go back. Not to mention they probably formed a bond way before that without even knowing, likely ever since that time she beat him up. But they didn't realize before it was too late. It's kind of hard to explain for me (I tried), but I have a lot more sympathy for Annie's dad than I ever did for Grisha. Physical abuse is usually something that comes along with your own upbringing, and people do it either because they think it's "not all that bad" when they haven't worked through their own shit yet or because they lose control in critical moments. On the other hand emotional abuse is deliberate and systematic. That's the difference.
