Viking Knarr taking shape

Ladies and gentlemen,

today I can show you the progress I made on the texturing of the Viking trading ship and how far I got with the first test build.

The first texturing run was very smooth as my experience with and the templates from the Longship taught me a couple of shortcuts I could use. So now I got almost all the core parts textured and was ready to start a first testbuild.

As with the Longship the biggest issue I found are that I have to/want to move the part seams of the interior and exterior plank parts to A) better hide the seams and B) make the overlap well with the underlying core tabs for a good assembly experience.

Another issue was the because I glued the basic hull first and let it dry the sides were a little wider than the parts of the raised decks and the "separating railings". You almost don't notice it unless you look for it but I will have to see if I can do something about it.

In general though I am very happy with this ship shape. It's different enough to the Longship to make for good variety in a harbor setting with both ships.

Speaking of the Longship ... here is a comparison pic with both showing the size difference.

The Knarr is basically the same width but shorter in length while still having enough space on deck for minis!

And the raised decks make a good space for the transported goods in the submerged area. Here I have thrown in all the Basic Bits I could find that would fit!

I still have to add the traversing railing part where the mast will be and then make some connector for the mast for this stage and I have often seen more traversing railings closer to bow and stern too.

Next stage will be to adjust the part seams, fix some minor texturing issues, add dirt and then go for another test build!

For loading stuff I want to make a wrapped up Basic Bit similar to what you can see in this pic.

If time allows I might also throw in another bit for the Grenzwacht setting too!

That wraps it up for today! Lots to do but I really enjoy the ship coming together!!!

Until next time, stay safe and keep building :)

Chris

I would suggest any of the smaller pirate boats (rowing boat, jolly boat or the gunboat ... or take the small ships bundle for all three) to get an understanding how my method of putting the hull together works. If you want to go for the larger pirate ships (or just want to see a big ship go together) watch my Youtube build series for the Brigg to see all the steps.

Looks good. I’ve never tried a boat before. Which one would you suggest as my first?

Good to hear! :)
