2025-03-26 16:48:26 +0000 UTCIt's interesting that both Final Fantasy IX and Majora's Mask — two games released in the year 2000 at the tail end of their respective consoles' generation — both had heavy, dark themes of impending doom and death. Why? I don't know, but I get the feeling that with Y2K hysteria being fervent around this time, maybe that collective uncertainty bled into some creatives' work.

I was streaming my first playthrough of the game with my friend Yvonne and we had a ball of a time. Throughout playing the game, I was notified of her terminal diagnosis and she eventually passed. But like IX, I always focus on the good times I had with her instead of just her death and FF IX will always be a game I cherish because it'll never make me forget my friend.

It has a simple story, simple characters, and simple gameplay, but all of it is just so solid and well executed that I don't even care. It is still one of my favorite RPGs and one of my favorite PS1 games. I think this video really did it justice.

I tried it on game pass years ago and I felt silly that I didn't know what to do in the opening segment. Also, I feel you about generative AI. It's made reddit threads and sketchy sites less fun to look at with constant generated images 😭
