A blessing given. A tightly held ward loosened upon the threshold. And then the conveyance rumbled inside in a blast of light and sour smoke.

They dashed through the shadows in excitement. Too long. Far too long. Had they played too many pranks before? Was that why all the others went away? The solitude was peacefully appreciated, but it could be so terribly... boring.

They smelled it on them as the newcomers gathered 'round to break their bread. A faint stink. Another of the folk. Still lurking on the conveyance. A rival not inclined to leave their own sanctuary.

It was all nearly drowned out by the biting, burning, blistering presence of the bright one. But they had asked proper permission.

They skittered in glee. They were a rock along the floor. They were a half-seen pipe along the ceiling. They were beneath the table piled high with shiny things and tributes of salt and sugar.

They benevolently overlooked the extra one crawling in through the gaps in the walls and the tasty vermin that surged in their wake. After all, the small cake that one left behind was tastier still. As were the pretty polished stones that the group scattered all around.

Someone left a glossy packet of soft cream and crispy sweets out for them. They tossed another bright bit of color back in trade.

"Who keeps throwing condoms at my head?!" One of them shouted, while someone cackled out there in the darkness. Someone's heartbeat accelerated in anticipation.

Yes. It was always fun to play with humans.
