Gestalt psychology is an attempt at understanding how we are able to simplify the complexity of the world around us by grouping elements or relating parts to each other.
Gestalt is particularly concerned with the phenomenon "the whole is other than the sum of it's parts" (note "other" is often mistranslated to "greater") and attempts to explain this through theoretical principles.
Many of these principles can be understood and applied by artists and designers to achieve compelling imagery.
This tutorial is a brief description of some of these principles, but we'll go a bit deeper in later tutorials.
