The Solution

“Welcome to Phoenix Enterprises, do you have an appointment?”

Anna nodded, rocking back and forth on two incredibly large canine paws for feet as the busty bovine Shania pressed the intercom button. “Miss? Anna is here for her appointment. Shall I send her back?”

Smiling warmly, Shania opened the door to the back area allowing Anna to walk through. The hallway seemed much wider than normal though Anna was busy in her own mind, trying to organize her thoughts. It had been four days since the contamination occurred, forcing four employees into a permanent canine form. Despite her best efforts, Anna couldn’t unravel what the rogue doctor had done. The two spouses had come back after their three-day formula had worn off to check in and get another dose. While they were there, Anna got a status update on everyone.

Dawn, the golden retriever, had difficulty adjusting to her form. Even though she couldn’t help much, she tried to help her husband make dinner. It was rather comical to see the retriever on her hind legs, barking at her husband whenever he was about to do something wrong. At night, she would lay with Cho, who had turned into a dalmatian, to give her some companionship. The husband chuckled on the first night, as both Dawn and Cho had jumped up on the bed. “You know honey, when I thought about sleeping in the same bed with two women before, the picture in my mind was quite a bit different.”

Tina and her girlfriend became an instant hit with Dawn’s children. The two corgi’s loved playing tug, while the kids thought it was super cute when the two would frap, rolling around on the ground to expend energy. Maria and her husband, both Great Danes, were a bit more private, opting to lay together outside for much of the day. What troubled Anna was the report from Tina and Maria’s significant others. As time passed, both noted that Tina and Maria were not communicating the same way they were at first. While they barked to each other the same, both noted that their sentences were starting to become more fragmented. Rather than saying ‘I really want to go running outside,’ the sentence was now ‘I go run!’

Afraid of what she was told, Anna had taken time to go to the house and pull DNA from them again. Analyzing it, Anna found that the human aspects of their respective DNA were not as prevalent as they were three days prior. At this rate, the four canines would likely be fully canine, in body and mind, within the next five days. The reason for her abnormally large canine paws was embarrassing. Once she learned the potential fate of the four women, Anna pulled an all-night session trying to come up with a reversal formula. In the wee hours of the morning, she had clumsily knocked a vial over onto the ground. When she tried to jump, both feet landed in the spilled concoction. Of course, it was experimental and had no reversal serum, but that was far from Anna’s mind. Arriving at the end of the hall, Anna knocked on the door with Phoenix’s name in gold letters on the outside. The door opened on its own and Anna walked in. “Have a seat darlin’, I’ll be with you in a moment.”

Unsure where the voice came from, Anna slowly sat down while still looking around the room. She felt a chill on her arm, as though something just brushed against her. The large desk chair across the desk twisted and a vial the was sitting on said desk rose up into the air, the contents emptying into nothingness. “I promise darlin’, I’ll be visible shortly. Testing new serums can be quite an experience. Out of everything I’ve done in the past, I’ve never turned completely invisible.”

Anna’s jaw dropped as Phoenix’s body began to appear. She had always known Phoenix as an inhumanly tall, voluptuous redhead, standing nearly eight feet in height. The form showing up however, was far from that. The red hair and violet eyes were still there, but her body was not human at all. Green in hue, she must have been ten feet tall! Her body was heavily muscled and when Phoenix put her bare feet up on the desk, they were far larger than even Anna’s massive paws. Looking up, two large incisors jutted out of Phoenix’s mouth, who ran a meaty, thick hand through her silky red hair. “I trust you came here for a reason other than to stare awkwardly at me?”

Anna blushed and Phoenix laughed. “Don’t be embarrassed! I’d be staring at me too! Isn’t this form crazy? Someone wanted to really impress at a comic convention so I whipped this up. Do I look enough like an orc?”

“I would say you definitely look the part. It’s a bit strange seeing such a manly looking form with a feminine voice.”

Giggling cutely, Phoenix shrugged. “The customer wanted to retain their voice so people would recognize them. Once we’re done here, I’m going to turn back. The muscles are nice but having the body of a male orc is a bit awkward. I even went into the wrong bathroom because I wasn’t thinking.”

“As much as I’d love to talk with you about this more Phoenix, I’ve come to you with a very serious problem. One of the genetic engineers went rogue and contaminated a water dispenser in our office. Four women, all in accounting, drank from it. They’ve all been turned into dogs, but without any kind of timeframe instituted. As far as my research shows, the time element was suppressed, making their transformations permanent.”

The orc tapped her chin. “I see. So then what you need is some formula that will override the canine one permanently to reverse it. That’s a new one to me. No one has ever requested to turn their dog into a human being, mainly because the new human would have no knowledge, other that what they’d learned as a dog.”

Anna’s expression became more serious. “On that same note, the significant others of two of the women reported back to me two days ago and told me the women were not speaking in the same way as they were at the start of the whole ordeal. They aren’t using full sentences and their vocabulary seems to be diminishing. I ran their DNA and found something disturbing. The human DNA was beginning to break apart, leaving only canine DNA. If it breaks up completely…”

Phoenix gasped, bringing a hand to her mouth. “Then they will lose all knowledge of their human lives!”

“Exactly. Phoenix I’m at my wit’s end on this. Nothing I’ve tried seems to eradicate the canine DNA! Plus, if you haven’t noticed, I’ve had my own little accident as well.”

Chuckling slightly, Phoenix nodded. “At least they look adorable, though I’m sure walking has become a bit more cumbersome.”

Anna nodded, but refocused the conversation. “My issue is manageable and I really don’t mind the paws. Often I’ll give myself paws just because I hate wearing shoes. Do you think you can help me with a reversal formula? I’ve brought all my research and findings for you to look at.”

“Of course darlin’, I’ll give it a try. However I cannot promise anything. As I said, a formula like this isn’t easy. With the canine DNA breaking down the human DNA, it’s not just a simple reversal. I hope that rogue scientist has been taken care of.”

Smirking, Anna shrugged. “Well, we couldn’t charge him with anything, as we had no real evidence that he was the one who did it, but I’ve heard that there’s a strange man the comes out at night with a hairless canine face and large hairless paws muttering about figuring out how to fix it. I’m guessing that’s him.”

Laughing heartily, Phoenix stood up, absolutely dwarfing Anna in both height and stature. “I’ll get to work on the formula. I must warn you though, I’m a bit worried that I may not come up with a solution in time. Rewriting DNA a second time can cause the body to become unstable. I won’t be able to test it on anyone and will have to reply on introducing it to the DNA you’ve brought me.”

Nodding, Anna turned on her paws and left the clinic while Phoenix returned herself to her human form. Vagabond knocked on the door quietly and smiled. “It’s good to have you back to normal Miss. That orc form was intimidating, and I’ve seen you in many forms.”

“You think that was intimidating? Try going to the bathroom standing up for the first time! Speaking of, let Shania know that I’ll clean the men’s restroom today. It wouldn’t be fair to have her do it after the mess I made. Also, bring me a case of energy drinks. It’s going to be a long, long day.”

Sequestering herself in the lab, Phoenix went straight to work. Normally she would consult with Virceena, who acts as the doctor when Phoenix is elsewhere however, given the nature of this reversal, she thought it best to leave Virceena out of it. Hours went by with Phoenix never leaving the lab. Shania had left to go work in the shop along with Virceena, leaving only Phoenix and Vagabond in the clinic. Peering through the window, Vagabond could see Phoenix’s pouring over her notes dressed in a tight-fitting labcoat which hugged her ample chest, and panties. It was a sexy look, but Vagabond was looking more at Phoenix’s face. Her eyes were bloodshot and puffy, while her long red hair looked like it had gone through a tornado. Opening the door carefully, Vagabond tiptoed to Phoenix, setting down some food and a coffee. “You haven’t eaten anything today Miss. I brought you some coffee, but maybe Miss should consider resting a for a little bit?”

“I wish I could darling, but those four women’s human lives are at stake. If I can’t figure this out, soon, they are going to be stuck forever. One of them has children! I can’t bear the thought of children having to grow up never understanding why their mother is a golden retriever. Don’t worry, I’ll be fine. Why don’t you go home and rest. I’ll see you in the morning.”

The cat girl wanted to refuse, but she wasn’t the type to disobey. Sulking slightly, Vagabond closed the door while Phoenix went back to work. The answer was somewhere in here and come hell or high water, she was going to find it!

The next morning Vagabond unlocked the clinic, hopeful that Phoenix had at least taken a small cat nap. Opening the door to the lab, Vagabond gasped. Phoenix indeed had fallen asleep on the floor of the lab. One of the beakers on the table was on its side, the top of it directly over Phoenix’s head, and the contents nearly emptied as an occasional drip would fall, landing on her head. “Miss! Wake up! You’re… oh my…”

A thick layer of red fur covered Phoenix’s body while her face resembled a wolf. Vagabond could see she still hand regular hands, though they were much larger, the clawed nails more than two inches long. Phoenix rolled over, yelping as she rolled onto her tail. “What… what time is it darling? I must have dozed off.”

Rising to her pawed feet, Vagabond stared blankly as Phoenix hit her head on the twelve-foot ceiling. Her lab coat was still on, but only one button remained fastened. When Vagabond left, the coat nearly touched the ground. Now, it was just barely covering her panties. It took Phoenix a moment before the sleep fog cleared. Once it did, she sat down on the floor, staring at her hands. “I was thinking that I needed to turn back the clock on canine DNA and go back to the baseline DNA, that of a wolf. I guess I hit the table when I fell asleep. Mental note; don’t sleep in a lab with open beakers lying around.”

Vagabond giggled softly. “I’ll make sure to remember that. Was the night’s efforts fruitful Miss?”

Furrowing her brow, Phoenix shook her head. “I’ll figure it out. I feel refreshed now. Time for another day!”

“But Miss? Shouldn’t you fix yourself first?”

“Nonsense darling. I have all the time in the world to come up with a reversal for me. I only have a couple days to fix those women.”

The day went on without much fanfare. Shania held all messages for Phoenix and Vagabond went to Phoenix’s shop, to help Virceena and Dolly out. At about four in the afternoon, Shania nearly fell out of her chair as a resounding growl came from the back. Running back, her cloven hooves clomping the floor she opened the door. “Miss?! Are you okay?!”

The tall wolf grinned, showing all her teeth. “Call Anna and have her round up the four women. Also, call Vagabond and have her come here. I’m going to need her help.”

An hour later, Anna, holding four leashes, walked through the clinic door. Behind her, a golden retriever, dalmatian, corgi, and greyhound trotted along, looking around curiously. Shania escorted them to a hospital kind of room where Vagabond stood. The moment the canines saw the cat girl, all four began barking, pulling on the leashes in an effort to scare Vagabond away. It nearly worked, as the incessant barking along with fangs was enough to make the cat girl scream and jump onto the bed. From another room, a loud howl was heard, making all four dogs stop barking, tucking their respective tails between their legs. Vagabond hopped back down, composing herself. “Anna, my name is Vagabond. Miss found an answer for your situation. Sadly, she could not be here to administer the solution. She’s a bit indisposed. It’s not perfect, but Phoenix is certain that they will return to human form.”

Anna beamed with excitement. “That’s great news and not a moment too soon. Tina’s girlfriend told me that Tina was barely speaking any longer. Please, hurry!”

Vagabond held a syringe and pushed it into the greyhound first, eliciting a growl from the dog. Unfazed, she continued with the dalmatian, then the golden retriever. Last, she injected the solution in the corgi. “Miss told me that the transformation should go quickly. I sure hope so, because all four look like they really want to kill me now!”

Just to be safe, Vagabond hopped back up on the table while Anna unhooked the collars from the four dogs. True to Phoenix’s word, all four began growing larger, the fur receding into their bodies. Anna squealed with delight as their legs lengthened, while the paws shifted back into human hands and feet. As their muzzles shrunk, so did their tails. All four women, now naked, immediately covered themselves up. Dawn was the first to speak. “What the heck?! Where are we and why are we naked and what happened to your feet Anna?!”

Laughing, Anna pulled out clothing for each of the women and both her and Vagabond left the room to allow some privacy. It was Tina who dressed first, and then looked at Cho. “Cho? You uhh, still have dalmatian ears.”

Cho reached up, feeling two floppy ears and gasped. “Tina, you have corgi ears!”

Eyes widening, Tina reached up, feeling to pointed ears at the top of her head. Dawn and Maria also reached up, feeling their own canine ears still attached. Opening the door, Cho yelled out, “hey guys? We have a problem here!”

Vagabond, not fully understand any of the technical jargon on the clipboard associated with this project, smiled meekly. “Let me see if I can get Miss to see you all. Fair warning though, she’s a bit… well you’ll see.”

Running down the hall, Vagabond knocked on the door to Phoenix’s office. A moment later, she emerged. “Please everyone, come in.”

Tina, Dawn, Cho, Maria, and Anna filed into the room, all of them frozen in fear at the sight before them. Phoenix had taken off the lab coat, since her fur hid her bare skin. Standing up, the women gasped at how tall she was. The ceilings in this room were extremely high but Phoenix nearly touched them. She had to be at least sixteen feet tall! Looking down over her muzzle, two piercing violet eyes peered at the five. “What seems to be the issue?”

It took a moment for anyone to find their voice. Maria finally squeaked out, “we still have dog ears.”

Flashing a toothy smile, Phoenix nodded. “There wasn’t much else I could do as your time was running out. Had we not changed you today, it is highly likely that your human minds would have been lost forever. The scientist that developed the strain of formula you all were exposed to is either truly messed up in the head, or is a sloppy geneticist. The way the formula was designed, in a week’s time, you would have been fully canine with no ability to ever change back. When I was first tasked with designing the original canine formula, I tested out various formulas just to get an idea of what each one would do. After the trial was complete, I administered reversal formulas for each woman. One of the women asked to keep her ears at the last minute so I quickly redesigned her reversal formula. After injecting her with W2K9R1-04, she did retain her ears but the reversal formula was too strong, and essentially made her body immune to future transformations.”

The four nodded absently, while processing the information. Tina’s eyes widened. “Wait a minute, so does that mean that we will always have canine ears?”

“I’m afraid so. Furthermore, none of you will be able to transform ever again. I was stuck between a rock and a hard place my dears. If given more time, I could have likely found a better solution. I figured you’d rather return to your human lives with a minor transformation than be stuck as a real dog. Was I incorrect?”

All four shook their heads. Dawn stepped forward. “No, I don’t think any of us would have liked that. I can’t imagine the pain my husband and children would feel, knowing the family dog was their wife and mother. It will be an adjustment, but i’m sure we will cope. Thank you Phoenix for trying so hard. I’m guessing that your transformation had something to do with this?”

“Indeed, it did. I’ll figure out my reversal eventually. This wouldn’t be so bad if I wasn’t so darn tall. I can’t leave the clinic! Speaking of reversals, Anna? Would you like me to start working on one for your foot paws?”

The four women turned to Anna, who inhaled deeply, then exhaled. “No. I was the one who hired that man and I feel responsible for not vetting him hard enough. If these four are forced to have dog ears for the rest of their lives, it is fitting that I should also bear a burden. It will remind me to be more cautious when hiring, and more cautious when working in the lab.”

“Very well darlin’. If there’s nothing else, would you kindly step out? I don’t mean to be rude, but it’s lunchtime and I’m ravenously hungry.”

They nodded and left the room. Upon entering the lobby, there was a large cow being led to the back while Shania looked as though she’d seen a ghost. Anna giggled. “Experiment gone awry?”

Vagabond shook her head. “Lunchtime for Miss.”

The women all gasped while Shania felt a tear rolling down her face for her bovine brethren.

**********

“Mommy? I need your help!”

Dawn’s ears perked up. Although she was in her bedroom and the kids were outside, her canine ears worked exactly as canine ears should, giving her a severely enhanced sense of hearing. Bounding down the stairs, Dawn went out to see what was going on.

**********

“I’m telling you sweetie, it’s not that bad! I kind of like them!”

Maria’s husband tried his best to convince her that she didn’t need to keeping wearing hats. He knew they were uncomfortable for her. Maria sighed, tossing the beanie onto the table. “Just once I’d like to go to the store and not have people staring at me.”

“Look at the bright side. At least you can go into the store and aren’t stuck sitting in the car while I shop. Now come over here. It’s been at least thirty minutes since I was able to kiss you.”

**********

“So, you mean they are real?”

Cho blushed and nodded. The date she had gone on during her transformation had left her a voicemail, checking to see if she was okay. When she called him back, she was shocked that he asked her on a second date. “Yes, I’m afraid they are one hundred percent real. If you want to cut the date short, I completely understand.”

“Don’t be silly Cho. I think they’re adorable!”

**********

“Ohh yes, that’s the spot right there! Don’t stop, mmmmm don’t stop!!!”

Tina’s eyes rolled back as her girlfriend rubbed and rubbed, making circular motions with her fingers. After a solid ten minutes of rubbing, Tina fell back against the couch, breathing heavily. “That was amazing sweetie!”

Giggling, Tina’s girlfriend sat down next to her. “I think I found your weak spot love.”

“I think you did too! Who would have known scratching behind these ears would feel so fabulous!!!”
