Electronic Bench Tips - Soldering and ESD!

Don't (((ZAP))) those FET's. Here are some Electronic Bench Tips that will help with "ESD" or "Electrostatic Discharge" considerations. A Steady Hand - See how easy it is to solder SMD components even if your hands shake, use this method for easy soldering. Enjoy!

Electronic Bench Tips - Soldering and ESD!

Comments

Been watching you and others use flux and solder things for a while. Grandson was here and broke his Xbox control cable input, a 5-pin micro-USB. Run to Walmart got him another one but thought let's see if I can find the part and fix this one. Got some liquid solder past, un-solder the old part, cleaned the holes with solder flux and solder wick. Little flux and a un-steady hand of a 75 year old and it fixed. Cost me 7 dollars but the new controller cost about 40, now we have a spar.

FYI the part number given for the angled soldering tip is a Digi-Key number. The Hakko number is T18-BR02. This caused a bit of confusion for me when looking it up on the web.

what if we use soldering paste and hot air, not touching any pin or trace? Would it need any grounding ?

I've removed the anti-static matt from my bench. I have been doing a lot of tube point to point work recently and I was randomly being shocked while taking proper care not to be shocked. After a while it dawned on me that the matt is conductive, it must be by nature of what it does. Working with the higher voltages in tube equipment, if I had good contact with the matt and parts of the project, I would get a tingle or a bit more. Yep the matt is gone and so is the random shocks from tube equipment.
