Had a silver mica capacitor go bad. it went from 52 pf 1000 v to 30 pf and the transmitter was not sending the proper out put. when i replace it, it worked right now.

I have a Teac A-4010sl Reel to Reel that has Suzuki Oil JCP-A caps. I have ordered new electrolytic caps of the same value. They are known in the reel to reel communities as Suzuki bombs. Have you ever run across those?

I would suggest a 47 or 50 is in most cases are interchangeable. As a side note, it is probably most important to buy good quality electrolytic caps. Beware that replacements are high enough in voltage over what is called for with a safety factor.

It depends on the application. If it’s for filtering (like a power supply filtering), go larger. In general, go larger. Some exceptions I suppose, like if it’s an audio response filter, will depend, so either may be ok. If it’s a critical RC time constant, anti-aliasing, etc., depending on the application, you should try to stick with the original design value, within the specified tolerances (e.g. +/- 10%, 20%, etc.). Hope that helps.

Newbie question: if I have to replace a known bad 47mfd electrolytic. Which would be better to use, a 44mfd or a 50mfd.? …if those are my only choices. They sent 47’s but they all read differently. Schematic calls for a 47. It’s rare I ever get exact caps from the manufacturer.
