Schematic Diagram "EXP" For The Ultra Probe Detector - Amplifier!

See and hear the performance of the new Carlson Ultra Probe base unit! The Demodulator / Detector - Amplifier Schematic "EXP," and the "Specific Parts List" are both below this video as attachments. Enjoy!

Known schematic changes, updates, and modifications, check back often for these updates:

#1 **NOTE** A capacitor has been added to the schematic shown (LM386 area) If you build this, download the current schematic.

I am a member. How do I request attachments? ***Note: I have the idea now. Find the number of the project such as #181 Box vers. Ultra Probe then PM with my email address requesting build docs. Have done so but expect to wait - I am a new member.

I have just completed the build and it works quite well, although I have not placed it in a box or anything. Some observations 1). This is a very accessible build. With all the parts 1206/sot23, it would possible to build without a scope, although a pair of loupes would helpful. I used an Andonstar camera scope, which worked quite well. 2) use lots of flux to get good solder joints. Mr C’s hint about using lacquer thinner to get the flux off is key. Your build will look pristine after using it. 3). 3/4 inch copper pipe makes a great probe head. Copper caps just slip on the ends. 4) This probe picks up EVERYTHING. Nearby radio stations and anything in your house that generates noise. Just holding it near my Precision E200 signal generator picks up modulated RF, just like in the video. Also, I suggest using the optional 10uf capacitor for higher gain. 5). This great fun, Paul! Thank you!

Yes i thought it was like that, but hoped it wasnt :D OK no worrys, i just have to enjoy building the last version leakage tester with the boost circuit and all :) I probably will need both testers as i am a readio amateur, planning on making my own transceivers one day. Thank you guys for clearing this for me :)

The SIFT device is use to determine the outside foil rap on capacitors. It will not test for leakage. Video 46: New SIFT Capacitor Tester Works Great! Check It Out. https://www.patreon.com/posts/new-sift-tester-19482632 Video 43: New! Ultra Sensitive "Forecasting" Capacitor Leakage Tester. Will test for leakage but it will not determine the outside foil of a capacitor. https://www.patreon.com/posts/new-ultra-tester-18564536

Hi guys. I am confused about the SIFT device and the Low Leakage Test device. Im aiming at both last versions. I thought the last version SIFT device should do both? Can anyone enlighten me about this? I must have fallen off the wagon somewhere on the way.... :D PS, i have asked Paul about this, but i guess he has lots on his mind, so while i wait for him to see my silly question.... :) Thank you :)

Ragnar Elstad

Hi Phil. It is RG316. Feel free to use either 50 or 75 Ohm coax of your choice.

Mr Carlson's Lab

Hi everyone, Mr. C, could you tell me please what type of coax cable (running from the probe to the amp) did you end up using in your design? Is it RG316? Thank you! KR, Phil.

Phil

Just noticed that too... makes the site decidedly less useful IMHO. (later) Apparently the community "feature" is only available on the app, which is really annoying if true.

Don Tidrow

Hi all, has anybody noticed that some time ago the ,,Members Posts,, (section/tab) has somehow magically disappeared from the mobile phone app while on PC was still accessible but, to my surprise today it has disappeared for good (it seems) on the PC platform as well. Well, I've made a written inquiry (to the Patreon's help and support section) a few days back regarding the mobile phone app but.... the answer I've got is that I should now access and subscribe to the ,,Community Chat,, instead. But under ,,community chat,, I simply cannot find the old members posts. Is basically nothing to see there. Now I'm thinking, am I missing something here or what's going on ?

The REG1117, would it be possible to replace with a similar regulator, like LM317 or LM337? Also, is it possible to use CD4066 instead of CD74HC4066?

Patrik Lindahl

Thanks for your kind comment James!

Mr Carlson's Lab

Hi Paul. I'm really looking forward to building the Ultra Probe. Would the detector amplifier work to detect fm modulated rf signals?

Steven Asprelli

Always love watching you and your project creations as well as knowing your thought process behind it all! I ordered my parts for the actual probe as soon as you released the files a while back and then was waiting for the det/amplifier info. I never built a surface mount project so either this project or the capacitor checker will be my first. I did manage to get the exact printer and paper that you recently tested; thanks for performing that testing. One request I have is for you to share your specific 'upgrades', steps & parts required, that you performed to get your laminator temperature higher than the 'stock' max. temperature? Reason I ask is I have the exact same laminator that you have. I would greatly appreciate knowing this. The laminator temperature is the only thing now preventing me from creating a 'good' PCB. Thanks Mr. C

Is the ultra probe complementary to the super probe or does it completely replace it ?

Ken Fay

I think you are brilliant !!!

James Gebhard

Thanks for all the hard work! I built the through hole probe and I’ve been using my signal tracer with it, but this will be great addition. What size speaker do you recommend for this?

Gregory carolan

Thank You Paul, as usual your test equipment is excellent. I am looking forward to building and using this new piece of equipment. Please keep up the exceptional work!!

Copy this link, its in the first line under "features" https://www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/cd74hc4066.pdf?ts=1701618375515&ref_url=https%253A%252F%252Fwww.ti.com%252Fproduct%252FCD74HC4066

Paul, I downloaded the datasheet for the CD74HC4066, and was surprised that it doesn't list the maximum voltage that nY or nZ can tolerate. It does show maximum current, but not volts. Am I missing something like "silicon-gate CMOS technology" always has a limit of "x" volts?

Dan Barker

Thank you for the great nice jop you do all the time.. God protect you and all of your family. With my best regards. Wish you all the best

Even if we don’t build your circuits, this is the new “How it’s made “ and “Modern Marvels” channel. But the reflow oven is almost done and the probe series will be cooking soon.

Steve Foudray

Yes, It has been added. Thanks.

Mr Carlson's Lab

Great build , waiting for final complete update and board layout.

RICHARD OCKMAN

Happy to follow you again on this project. After the build video I'll appreciate another video on using this device in different situations of real troubleshooting devices. Many thanks

TAILLANDIER

Looking good! Ordered my parts and ready to go.

Andrew Cockburn

Sounds great, Paul! Right now, I'm back into watchmaking, but when I get back into electronics the Ultra Probe will be first on my list. Thanks.

Robert Calk Jr.

Probe body looks like reused old aluminium solder pump. Smart, it alredy has threads on bouth ends.

Sinisa Trlin

Excellent, i will build one. On schematic output capacitor for LM386 is omitted.

Sinisa Trlin

Truly outstanding! Very impressive performance. Looking forward to building this and better yet, using it to troubleshoot. Thank you.

Eric Fox

Fantastic unit.

Tom Harris

Alllright. Gonna build it all now lol

Aaron Brinkman

Excellent peice of kit . Thank you Paul !

TWISTED1

Wow, it's great to have the schematic for this! Thanks a lot for posting it! It's definitely on my list of electronic projects!

Adrian Bartoli

I learn alot from your videos and find them all entertaining and informative. Thank you for your time and effort in making and posting these videos

John VE1JTD

Hot damn! Been waiting
