Lesson 10 Part 10 - How To Fix Just About Anything Electronic!

Tuning diodes or "Varactor Diodes" are found in many tuners, receivers, oscillators, (VCO's) and many other applications. Here is how they work, and how to test them with a circuit we built in Lesson 3. Once you see this video, understanding Varactor controlled circuits is a breeze. Enjoy!

NOTE: If you're using the information in this video or attachments, building the circuits, and using your own test equipment, or any equipment, you are doing so at your own risk. If you do not understand this, or do not agree with this, Do Not use this information, IE: (The information in the video, and in any attachments provided,) and do not build anything.

Lesson 10 Part 10 - How To Fix Just About Anything Electronic!

Great video Paul. I've been working on a Heathkit hw-5400 transceiver from the 80s. It uses two vco's for tuning. After watching this video the circuit makes so much more sense. Interestingly the Heathkit vco's use fets for the oscillator with a npn driver transistor at the output.

Did anyone get this to work?

Steve Kean

Added the POT with the brush connected to a 10kR and NP0 103 ceramic cap connected to the top of the coil. NTC 614 Varactor (33 PF, at 4V) only showed 95k from 0 to 8.5vdc. RED LED 34khz. Oscilator running at 22.291 +- 1khz. Very stable; just NOT seeing the same results as the PART 10... What's up with this? Using Rigol DS1202 z-E oscilloscope on AC or DC coupling show's same results.

i need more learning, this was a good one https://www.ti.com/video/6245175641001

Can a varactor tuning diode be used to make a guitar effects pedal?
