I keep my eyes on medical equipment auction houses. From my experience maintaining equipment for a medical device/ environmental testing lab - lots of useful 'toys' can be had, sometimes for pennies on a dollar. You might find an agitating (oscillating?) adjustable temp hot plate, bench top ovens, microscopes, ect.
